At first, I thought I'd make this just a one-choice poll. Then I realized -- most fans have at least ten favorite Chuck Berry songs, so add the extra choice. I think I know what's going to get the most votes, but maybe they'll be a surprise.
Voted for Roll Over beethoven and Johnny B. Goode, but my favorite Chuck Berry tune is actually 'Downbound train'.
"Memphis": probably the first example in rock of a song that misleads you for most of the way, only to reveal at the end that you've been tricked. "Too Much Monkey Business": I love the wordplay in this one, especially the way Keith Relf sings it on Five Live Yardbirds.
Havana Moon towers above the rest for me by virtue of the fact that it stands apart melodically from all of his other, “usual” songs that most people would run for. The very first time I heard it I couldn’t believe it was him…loved it instantly.
too much monkee business and memphis check the tires wipe the windows check the oil. dollar gas. or something like that lol
great minds etc charles was a wordsmith for sure. double back and coffee colored cadillac etc. brilliant.
Memphis, Tennessee for the lyrical twist and The Promised Land for the whole coast to coast story and golden glorious mythos honorable mentions: Johnny B. Goode and Brown Eyed Handsome Man
Only 2 selections is hard. Rock and Roll Music and Promised Land are two favorites but I could pick 10 others that are equally great.
I forgot about Promised Land. I was going to say Memphis because of the cute little surprise that he's singing about his daughter and You Never Can Tell.
I don't think I could remove 2 from that list as least favourites for that incredible list. There are not too many songwriters that could match that list.
