Bundy was the exemplar of Hannah Arendt's phrase "the banality of evil." If evil people all looked grotesque, they would never get away with half the evil they perpetrate. Jeffrey Dahmer was the same way - the gay friend of mine told me "yeah I definitely have gone home with him."

Once this premieres at the Sundance Film Festival, will this be in the theaters or will it be on Netflix or something?

Just finished the four-part Netflix doc on Bundy. I’m all done with him.

That’s why I’m not entirely ruling out that Zac could pull it off.

For what I’ve seen him in, he’s a decent actor but this something else completely.

  8. You know, he doesn't look that dissimilar from Ted Bundy. Bundy wasn't a bad looking guy; by all accounts he was a charmer.

I think the way Efron holds his mouth like Ted completes the illusion.

How was this? I was thinking about checking some out tonight.

It’s excellent. Very chilling. I binged it in one sitting. There’s a ton footage of Bundy in court speaking and talking to reporters. It’s done by the same director as upcoming movie with Hetfield.

I will definitely be checking this out via my obsession with pretty much anything true crime.
I thought Mark Harmom did a surprising great job as Bundy in the Deliberate Stranger in the 80s. Interesting to see how Efron does. I think Rob Lowe might have been a decent choice years ago.

I think he's referring to Bundy attacking the girls in the sorority house in Florida after he had escaped prison

Edit: sorry didn't realize the post was almost a year old.

  13. Yeah, I saw it. It was well made, though of course the subject matter twisted. I just couldn't help thinking of those poor women. Allegedly Bundy's first murder was when he was 14 and she was an 8-year old. Even watching this doc, one can never wrap their head around why a person would do those things.

I didn't know the doc and the upcoming movie was made by the same person.

The only thing I don't dig so far about the film trailer is that they put some modern music with a beat behind it. Really, it would seem more appropriate to the subject matter to give it some sombre music for better effect.

I'm sure he was "hot" when he fried in the electric chair.

Of course, the jokes started going around immediately:

Q: What was Ted Bundy's last job?
    A: Conductor

Q: What did Ted Bundy's mother die of?
    A: Son-burn

That's the thing about putting something out there publicly. You don't get to control people's reactions to it...

In a weird way though, maybe it says something about how he was able to commit these heinous crimes in the first place. Appearances can be deceiving...

I thought Netflix was being a bit silly about that, in reality they want people to be attracted not repelled, it makes more money.

I watched the series over the weekend. I literally did not learn one thing I didn’t already know about him. I didn’t find the documentary to be that good. The “conversations” were not even a truly integral part of the show. It was more just outlining his life and crimes through a rather pedestrian means of linear storytelling.

  17. This is true. I mean, it's cool that they did an updated documentary on Bundy, but when it boiled down to it the closest we came to Ted giving an explanation of what would cause somebody to do such cruel acts was pornography. Really, Ted, so insightful and all you could come up with was porn?

Really, they should have covered more before the Washington State murders, because there's actually a good chance that he started when he was 14, killing a local 8-year old girl. This guy was not a normal kid, only going off the rails until adulthood. His wires were crossed early on.

Agree completely. The Washington State murders are pretty well documented through several books.

Is there a good Bundy book? I saw the Ann Rule book on Amazon.

Even though it is one of those issues that will be debated until the heat death of the universe, access to pornography actually appears to reduce the rates of violence against women.

That’s the one I read first. It’s pretty comprehensive.

I only found out it was being released when it was trending on Twitter. People were going crazy over the interviews with Bundy and how shocking and chilling his words were. Turns out he didn't say much of anything and it was the least interesting part of the presentation. The tapes were almost getting in the way of the story being told.

I did think the chronology of events was very well put together for someone like me who only had a cursory knowledge of his crimes.

I'm going to watch this Zac Efron movie soon, he looks right in the role and I do think he's a better actor than he gets credit for.

Watched this today. Not bad. A little too light on the details for my liking, but Efron does a good job as does Lily Collins.
