i attended the 6/5/71 late show. my first time seeing zappa and my only visit to the fillmore east. i saw him again at carnegie hall later that year which was released a few years ago.
SOooooooo, do THIS mean I will no longer have to listen to "Freaks & Motherf#&%ers" & "Tango Na Minchia Tanta" from the "Beat The Boots" box????
Those are from the November 1970 Fillmore East shows. Some good stuff there that didn't make it to the 1971 shows, including the "Holiday In Berlin" suite and George Duke's keyboards.
This bit in the ZFT release intrigued me - "and for the very first time anywhere, contains the official audio of the Rainbow Theatre show’s truly shocking ending which was thought to have not been recorded until recently discovered while putting this project together." As FZ stated "the tape ran out" before that incident, this comes as a major surprise that we're finally gonna get to hear the entire show - grisly climax and all.
Re the Fillmore '71 vinyl exclusives: I see it includes the John and Yoko set, "King Kong - Solos" and "Billy The Mountain" (totalling three and a half LP sides). It's not certain from the release whether all of those are FZ vintage mixes, and it sounds like some (not all) of those will be in the CD box. I'm guessing "King Kong - Solos" is an FZ edit which will be exclusive to the vinyl.
Sad to see that the ZFT is now in full fan-rip-of mode as everyone else with the vinyl only ****. Sad would have been a fantastic box.
I find this rather morbid and in poor taste. But as FZ once stated sarcastically, " it's the 20th century so whatever you wanna do so long as it doesn't cause a murder, let's get on with it."
The UCLA show is from Aug 7, 1971. I'm guessing that the multi-tracks are missing (something Joe Travers has alluded to in the past) - hence, their exclusion from this set.
8/7/71 was recorded four track (two tracks for the band, one for vocals and one room mic). Maybe Joe will mention somewhere why that wasn't included. Since the set is very big and there's a good audience tape around of this show, maybe it seemed less essential. (FZ also claimed in the Psychotics liner notes that the 1:46 excerpt of "Divan" there was "all that survives" of the piece, no idea what that was about.)
