That was one of the first things I checked when I bought the Early Years box set. Seeing Frank and the Floyd together sent shivers down my spine.

Looks like a nice video camera there, I wonder if that Ritz video exists in The Vault archives. That show is fantastic.

 

Is there a tape of this? Would love to hear it!

 

I remember when I saw the cover of We’re Only in it for the Money, I thought what a bunch of creepy old guys. I bought it anyway based on a friends opinion. I became an instant devotee

 

No tape in circulation. Bummer.

 

"Clownz In Velvet" features some amazing playing by Di Meola. If I recall correctly, he wasn't very pleased with his performance, though.

 

I believe you are correct, I remeber that too. On a related note, last year Al had Steve Vai sit in with his band to perform that piece. Pretty cool performance with a nice preamble by Al . . .

FZ said in one or two interviews that he wanted to release it but Di Meola didn't give permission because he wasn't happy with his solo. In one of the web forums I read someone mentioning asking Di Meola about that, and he said he didn't remember it.

 

Lots of bristling energy pumping out rapid fire staccato flourishes, but it's not much of a musical statement. Still, the Ritz 1981 is an exciting concert.
