Cassette store day should be the day after Record Store Day, and sell tapes of all the RSD exclusives cheap.

Vinyl coming back arguably makes sense.

Reel-to-reel coming back (on an extremely limited basis) makes some sense.

Cassettes coming back (at retail price) is JUST for the creation of objects of fetishistic desire.

Might as well start selling 8-tracks, DCC tapes, pre-recorded minidiscs and hip pocket discs while you're at it.

(And I guess I would say that if it's a choice between another scarf or bag of marbles in the next super deluxe box, or a recording on one of these formats, give me the recording).

There's something both nostalgic and romantic about vinyl. It's more than a nostalgia trip, but I can't really explain my love for it. I don't think cassettes have the same appeal, at least for me. Thing is, though, I love mix tapes and I do feel nostalgic about those. My old JVC three head deck isn't even hooked up to my system and the thing that keeps me from dusting it off is the price of blanks - decent chrome tapes (Maxell XLII) are fetching upwards of $10 each on Amazon. I know it's economics of scale, but I don't think that cassettes have the same nostalgic appeal as vinyl and I don't see the public embracing blank tapes at $10 a pop.

Cassettes have inferior graphics to both CDs and vinyl.
They have inferior sound to both CDs and vinyl.
Accessing a particular song is much less convenient than on CDs or vinyl.

    On the plus side...got nothing...

You obviously haven't listened to a well recorded cassette on a great player.

You should go back and read the links provided. This has been discussed many times before.

If that was true they wouldn't be having a cassette day, would they?

They've become quite popular over the last few years, and many artists who release cassette versions of their lp's sell them out quite quickly.

I have. Pre-recorded cassettes are not well-recorded cassettes. A pre-recorded cassette is never going to better a CD from the same source material using the same mastering.

They are cheaper to produce, to ship and to purchase.

They will last longer than cdrs.

They are still the dominant format in many African countries.

I love them, so deal with it.

Cheaper to produce and ship than a CD in 2015? I doubt it.

Last longer than a CDR? Possibly, but since when is that germane to pre-recorded cassettes vs. pressed CDs.

Nice that they are the dominant form in Africa. I am sure that in 1965, you would be telling anyone that listens that 78s are way better than LPs, because they are still popular in India.

Pre-recorded cassette? Why would you listen to one that was recorded after you play it? :)

I doubt it. But I'll respectfully agree to disagree.

Oh, and they said the same thing about cd vs. vinyl not long ago. In fact, some people still do. I disagreed with them too.

Here we are in the age of lossless downloads, so you could arguably say the same thing about CDs. Damn, the audiophile house is BUILT on fetishistic desire. We only find it ridiculous if it's not OUR particular object of fetishistic desire.

I don't know what it is about this stuff that trips people up. A market exists for cassette tapes. Its small, its limited, and it may not appeal to you, but its there.

Look at the amount of releases!! And shops taking part. It really has come a long way. I wonder if there'll be queues too. I've read, here and elsewhere, that there is a whole subculture of exclusive releases on these cassettes which is really interesting.

And I have fond memories of my portable tape players and chrome tapes from the 90s :) But I won't be going back there.

    Yep. It's pure hipster fetishism.

I even saw a friend of a friend on Facebook state that they ripped out the CD deck from their new car and installed a tape deck instead. What??

If you wanted to be retro hip with a purpose... Install a quad 8track...

Growing up, my family's van had not only an 8-track deck, but a CB radio, too!
