Especially a slow tempo, but I'm sure there's some great stuff out there... I mention the 70s because I think it's when funk was at it's best, and the 60s still had that West Coast Jazz (Dave Brubeck, Stan Kenton), and usually the average listener will recommend stuff many know -- Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc., which I like (some of it), but lacked in melody, and was too technical for me and avante-garden for me (Miles Davis 70s stuff) and I'm sure there's a lot of great stuff that got overlooked.

    Female singer is a PLUS!

Pretty much anything played on a Hammond B3 organ. I've got a couple of Jimmy McGriff CD that fit your description. "The Bird" is one of my favorites. Jimmy Smith is another jazz organist but I haven't found anything as funky as McGriff's stuff...

Donald Byrd may be what you are looking for. I suggest 'Black Byrd' for starters.

This came to mind ... Grant Green - Cease the Bombing, great to play in a band even now ...

And "Fat Mama" by Herbie Hancock is REALLY funky with your traditional freestyle jazz riffing...

He's been mentioned but this is a Donald Byrd tune that fits the bill that's not on an already mentioned LP: (Falling Like) Dominos

Sir Duke. If you prefer it with female singers, check out our cover from Sept 30.

Not really, but thanks for posting.

  18. Donald Byrd's Ethiopian Knights (1972) -- which was his very last album pre-Larry Mizell's production -- might just do the trick...

  19. It's not quite as 'smooth' as the Mizell stuff from 1973 and after.

Yeah, so far so good... I forgot all about the song "Dominoes" until someone posted it on here -- good stuff; thanks!

P.S. - out of curiosity, what happened to his sound after 1972?
