If we believe Wikipedia, "Hasta Manana" was also a No. 1 hit in Sweden and No. 2 in South Africa. "Honey Honey" was on the B side.
"Shannon" peaked at No. 32 in the UK. You (cold/stoic) Brits don't fall for sugary songs about the death of a beloved Irish Setter.
    Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
    Maybe she'll find an island
    With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our backyard

She is anyway and Bobby Morrow like this.

Yes, along with things like Smash Hits - Country Style! We had a couple or so at home - plus MFP/EMI's Hot Hits and Chartbusters Boomin' on Marble Arch (some of those have Elton John in his role as a session man, doing contempory cover. But that's fairly well known these days.) And I've kept one too because when I was little, I found Sylvia's Mother on here to be mesmerising and used to play that over and over. I recall liking Starman a lot too. The song versions themselves could range from fairly faithful copies to unintentionally hilarious. :D

They were so cheap. In every way.:D

These LPs were less than a quid as I recall. Singles were about 50-60p in the early to mid-70s. My mum could never understand why I'd prefer to buy one single over an album 'with all those hits on'.:D

Thought I'd try a charts comparison. Apologies for the quality. I had to take the shots with my iPad camera.

This is the UK chart for the week ending 31/7/76.

U.S. charts for week ending 31/7/76 (even though you can see half of this on the above scan!)

I suspect this chart may be WE 24/7/76 as Record Mirror were usually a week behind on the American charts.

I can do lots of these 'scans' if people don't mind the dodgy quality.

By the way, if anyone wants to see a UK singles chart for any specific week in the 70's, I can do one.

Keep the scans coming. Loving them all. Picking out the songs & albums I still have in my collection.
Esp. loving the British charts where I can pick out the T R-Rex records (would love to see them on a US chart).

    No problem.

Sadly, even I can't make T. Rex a happening act in the States. Wish I could.

I seem to remember the same from my grandma too. Give me a Bryan Ferry single any day, over one of those - was how I thought back then... :agree:

From Wikipedia, relating to the UK album charts "...they were disqualified in early 1972 since their budget selling price was perceived as giving them an unfair advantage in the market." I suppose they had to have some advantage, then. ;)

The price and the cover pictures were their selling points.

Ha. As soon as I glanced at the Top Ten, I thought "This is more like it!!" :righton:Maybe a couple I could live without (and I bet you can guess which...) although I only remember or know just over 40 of them.

I still listen to quite a few of these acts often and at #16 it has Madness's debut single (their only for 2-Tone records) which was re-recorded for their debut album - my avatar/username.

Which is almost ironic as you'd think most of these would have been purchased as gifts by aunties and grannies. :D

Ruddy Nora - this is the chart from the week I was born! If someone asks me these days, what was #1 the week I was born... I say The Beatles' Abbey Road album and the one before that was Led Zeppelin II. And how cool too. :)

New entry at #33 for my favourite Badfinger track.

Nice. I'm going to look at setting an 80's chart thread up soon.

Really? That was lucky. I chose it at random as I haven't done many early charts yet.
