No, this not about the Pink Floyd LP. But it started with a Pink Floyd LP. A friend wants to buy my Final Cut LP and I said I would clean it and give it a listen first. As it was just about done on side two it reminded me of Mark Knopfler's Local Hero soundtrack. I don't know what sparked that but it was a case of one album leading randomly to another. It's happened to me before, many times, but this is fresh in my mind from just minutes ago.

Maybe it's random like my fresh experience or two albums that you've grown to love over a period of time that just seem to go together and set a mood. So, do you have a nice pair that you'd like to expose to us? I often tell my wife she has a nice pair to which she replies...which shoes are you referring to?

    Talking Heads "Remain In Light"

    paired with:

David Byrne & Brian Eno "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"
    -------------
This double entree makes sense, since at one point, Eno was considered an unofficial 5th Talking Head.

Both albums serve thick, murky sonic cesspools of sound collage, that transverse across a musical universe from 70's geeky New Wave to African and Middle Eastern rhythms with an ambient layer of electronics.

But, both albums are very accessible and logically connected...

Or, is this too obvious an example of a Nice Musical Pairing?

Neil Young - Comes A Time

    - paired with -

    Nicolette Larsen - Nicolette
    -------------
Both albums were released in 1978; each featuring a version of the catchy soft rock song "Lotta Love".

"Nicolette" was her debut album, and it captured her glowing, effervescent personality in song. She also sings backup and duets with Neil Young on his "Comes A Time " album.

    Extra trivia:
Nicolette first appeared on Emmylou Harris' "Luxury Liner", and was recommended by Linda Ronstadt (and others) to Neil. They both sing backup on "American Stars n' Bars".

Warner Bros then signed her up for a solo career.

Sadly, she passed away on Dec 16, 1997.

Final Cut and Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking absolutely go together. Just like two Red ruby slippers.

  7. All of the Beach Boys twofers, whether the albums have a lot in common (like Carl and the Passions/Holland) or not (like 15 Big Ones/Love You). Also Still Cruisin'/Summer in Paradise which I made a twofer of.

10cc's Deceptive Bends and Supertramp's Brother Where You Bound. Both of them are the first albums the bands recorded after founding members left, and both of them are albums I think are extremely underappreciated and often unfairly dismissed by fans. They're also my favorite albums by 10cc and Supertramp. It's worth noting that both of them have the bands showing their more progressive side and they contain each band's longest studio recording as well.

  12. "Golden Earring - Moontan"

    "Nektar - Remember the Future"

'Pop Space Rock' & 'Prog Rock'
Side 2 of "Moontan" is more 'spacey' like "Remember the Future" for a better segue then just going from "Radar Love" would be, IMO. Both European & both from '73.

I have the US version of SIP, so I combined the UK tracks with the unique Still Cruisin' tracks to make "Still Cruisin' in Paradise".

    Rolling Stones - "Sticky Fingers"
    Kanye West - "Yeezus"

I really believe "Yeezus" is in many ways a thematic cousin to "Sticky Fingers." It's the idea of pairing the sacred with the profane, the acknowledgment of one's own greatness with the insignificance of it. Kanye's offensive sampling of "Strange Fruit's" "black bodies hanging" to refer to "these bitches surrounding me" is analogous to the gleeful sexism and racism the Stones exhibit on "Brown Sugar." Likewise, "I'm A God" is great because Kanye's idea of Godliness is limited to people bringing him things faster ("hurry up with my damn croissants"). This reminds me of some of Jagger's lyrics off "Sway." When he sings "destroyed your notion of circular time" he's surely cognisant of that line's pompous ridiculousness in the same way Kanye is. It's these albums winking playfulness in the face of boastful gravity that ties them together for me.

Nilsson - Pussycats / Keith Moon - Two Sides of the Moon

Both LPs recorded in 1974. Both LPs feature Nilsson and Moon, as well as Ringo, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, Jesse Ed Davis, and Jim Keltner. They both have loose party vibes, and both feature songs by Nilsson and John Lennon, and rock'n'roll oldies and covers. And I can't be sure, but alcohol may have been involved in the making of both LPs. :)
