Don't really care about the Oscars, but to get it out of the way:

David O. Russell (don't know about this Benh Zeitlin) in front of Bigelow, Tarantino and the two Andersons? No cinematography nomination for The Master?

that one tends to go w/"best movie" so it makes sense for me; i would bump Zeiltin if anyone . . . cinematography for the Master, i would agree.

Oodles of stuff I haven't seen, so I can't comment on whether anything is/isn't worthy or what got left out.

I will say I'm surprised at all the love for Silver Linings Playbook. At least based on the promotional stuff I've seen, I never would've expected it to be a heavy hitter with Oscar nominations, but it does look interesting. It's been a long time since I've seen all or almost all of the Best Picture nominees going into the Awards.

Seems like a pretty mediocre to poor year for Oscar nominations.

i've seen all but amour and zero dark thirty (seeing it tomorrow) . . . seems like one of the stronger fields in recent memory.

we saw Silver Linings Playbook twice, and both agreed it was better the second time--a lot of subtle stuff going on for what seems in some ways a fairly "zany" movie. every part felt perfectly cast, and jennifer lawrence is just really, really strong--hard to imagine her not being both a huge star and highly respected actor for years to come.

He was interviewed this morning about how he felt about the Oscar slight. His answer: "Argo f--- yourself."

Russell may come off as a prick, but he can be SO good. Wrote and directed one of the best comedies of the '90s, "Flirting with Disaster". Then wrote and directed "Three Kings". Also did "The Fighter".

Seeing "Silver Linings" because of him shortly.

Why would you be surprised he's in front of Bigelow? I don't see how it's related. But if we're talking talent, I know who I would vote for.

This could be another smash for Lincoln. By the way, if I had to, I'd bet my money on Adele's Skyfall. Looking at the list, it's the only "already won" award, imho

I really loved every minute of Silver Linings Playbook, save for the end which only slightly disappointing. But that was only b/c I thought that the rest of the movie was oh so good. I wish that The Master, Anderson, and Affleck could've slipped in there but I'm really happy that Beasts of the Southern Wild is getting well deserved love.

there's always that possibility of the happy coincidence when Harvey actually has a very strong horse to promote . . . over-promotion can sometimes create a backlash affecting how a movie is perceived--but it can't change the actual quality of a movie. (my betting money would prb be on lincoln, a very well-acted and crafted mainstream movie).

as to judging a movie based on its trailer or promotion, just seems like way too little reliable info.

I also think that the director nominations are a surprise, in a good way. Very brave, that three underdog directors get in there against some of the bigger names like Bigelow and Hooper. I like the freshness here, and I hope to see this continue on when the winners are announced on Oscar night.

I am actually surprised Django is getting all these nominations. I'm planning to see it tonight and I enjoy Tarantino's movies because they are so ridiculous but I just figured we were all laughing at/with them.

Then again Heneke's also getting tons of noms, so maybe this is the year they are bringing the freaks into the mainstream.

Heneke's a great director and I've seen a bunch of his other films but I don't know if I can handle Amour.

Easily the most overrated film of last year.

For my personal awards, I'd give that one to Moonrise Kingdom. I enjoyed Beasts quite a bit.

I don't care what wins but I am happy that The Dark Knight Rises didn't get nominated for any of the major awards. Excuse me while I troll movie message boards for awhile for fun.

  20. I suspect it's in there more for percieved "serious" and "important" subject matter than for the quality of the film per-se, which I haven't seen but gather is justa nother high-style bloodbath.
Hey, at least Argo got a nom. I suspect that maybe the Academy isn't quite ready to give a Director nod to the former one-half of Benifer, though!

  21. Haven't seen this one either, but if the various trailers and promo clips are a good indication of the film itself I'd be inclined to agree.

  22. I listened to some movie critics on a radio show today and they all basically thought this is going to be The Year of Spielberg. I'd be fine with that, the guy has been shafted in the past, time to let him bask in the spotlight. Haven't seen the movie so can't comment on it's worthiness.

Spielberg has been shafted? Huh? I read today that if he wins both Picture and Director for Lincoln, which are likely, he will be the director with the most Oscars in history.

I am going to see Django tonight- nothing to do with Oscars, I just like Tarantino's silly movies. But Dudley Morris' guess seems reasonable to me- it has SLAVERY to it needs attention to Oscars, even though certainly it is probably just full of murder and jokes.

Beasts isn't a bad film by any stretch, it just is getting way too many accolades for what it is, which is just a nice little meandering independent film where a very young actor is repeating lines fed to her off-camera.
