I don't know about you guys, but every time I see this scene it really gets me, when young William opens the bag with all of his sisters albums and looks through them. (You have to watch the Zooey Goodbye before he gets the bag out from under the bed)

For some reason when he goes through the albums it's like he's going through my youth.............

Yes, that collection is amazing. It could have also been almost any 20 other albums from the time and still be amazingly great(Beatles, Floyd, Airplane, Dead etc.). What I really love about the scene and his infatuation of music is that it's the transition to the 15 year old William. It is almost like Dorothy falling asleep in The Wizard of Oz.

Yep. I felt the same way. I grew up in the 70's as well.

Reminded me of me and my older sister. I cried when I first saw that scene.

Bad continuity error though - that scene is in 1969 yet Joni Mitchell’s Blue wasn’t released until 1971.

Crowe said that he did that on purpose. I don't know.. it's a weird choice.

He said, involuntarily revealing himself as the annoying know-it-all party pooper.

Love this movie, as I'm sure 99% of forum members do.

Fantastic scene! S & G's America is the perfect background music. Some great quotes:
"One day, you'll be cool. Look under your bed, it will set you free."
"She'll be back. Maybe not soon."

As @budwhite said above, this was a conscious decision which Crowe addresses in the commentary. He said even though the album wasn't out yet, it fit so perfectly with the mood he was trying to evoke with the scene that it was worth the error. I agree completely, and it's never bothered me at all.

I love this film so, so much.

Damn, that was a truly heartfelt scene. I need to watch the film finally, for some reason I never got round to it. A fantastic record collection!

The movie captures the whole feel and look of the time period so well. Love it.

Completely lost on me, as I can't stand Joni Mitchell. Love the film. 162 min. Director's Cut.

Great scene. Crowe is a bit older than me, but I related to the movie.

The DVD commentary was Crowe...and his mom! The definition of "uncomfortable" - watching a scene of a lightly fictionalized version of yourself losing his virginity to a trio of groupies (sorry - Band Aides) with your mother!

Some of her best acting was in this deleted scene. They couldn't get permission to use Stairway to Heaven, so he included the scene as an extra on the DVD without the song, and instructions on when to start the song on your own.

Luckily, someone married them and put it up on YouTube.

This was so hard on Frances, as she loves Stairway!

Thanks y'all! I wasn't sure if this scene impacted others like it did me. I really connect with that movie somehow, as it's one of my all time favorites. Mostly because it's music related and takes place in a time that I can relate to.

I thought those particular albums seemed fairly stereotypical highlights for the time the movie was made. I dunno, an older sister having Cream... and Pet Sounds? Was Pet Sounds even that popular at the time? I would've thought there might be some Sly Stone, Janis, and some danceable pop stuff, some singles, then again I don't know his sister. That all seemed what Crowe thought was cool. I guess I could imagine albums he doesn't show because he forgot them not being of interest to him (and threw in Joni Mitchell's Blue to sort of represent those). I hope you don't hate me for this honest reaction, I hesitated to share it. Not my fave movie... though the Lester Bangs in it seemed well done. So, someone used the name Penny Lane? I don't know if they did or not, reality could be cornier than fiction on that, but the band having been fictionalized I'm thinking 'fantasy character'.
Again, apologies in advance for my critical take on it. :sigh:
