    It was worth it!

  2. The way I see it, movies, and art in general are supposed to bring out emotions on people, some may be "Joyful and life affirming" and some other may be dark and nasty. Wheter if you cried watching "The sound of music" or vomited watching Hostel, both have served their purpose.

"Come with uncle," I said, "and hear all proper. Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. You are invited."

I like this Roger Ebert quote, from his review of Wolf Creek:

I like horror films. Horror movies, even extreme ones, function primarily by scaring us or intriguing us. Consider "Three ... Extremes" recently. "Wolf Creek" is more like the guy at the carnival sideshow who bites off chicken heads. No fun for us, no fun for the guy, no fun for the chicken. In the case of this film, it's fun for the guy.

I find the Quentin Tarantino movies a rip off....I just have that cynical feeling that his name almost allows for any ol crap he makes to be marketed heavily and most people buy into it.

Its almost like Bose...I refuse to become a Tarantino fan, or of any of the other crap that they put out these days...

Its disgraceful and embarrasing that I had to drive to Atlanta 4 hrs away to be able to see the movie Rescue Dawn, which is a great movie.

The problem with the genres that need shock value is that we need more and more sick ****ed up things to shock us...Sad really!!!

...of course, if anyone happens to notice that you named the film "Psycho"... ;)

I was able to sit through Hostel, and it made me cringe a bit; guess I took it for what it was. The Passion, on the other hand, had me to the point of tears, and has been the only movie of any genre that I absolutely have not been able to watch in its entirety.

    Yeah, yeah! :D

No, I don't think it surprised anyone that something scary happened in a flick named "Psycho"; I doubt anyone really thought it'd all be about Janet Leigh and her theft of some money.

But that film and "Hostel" DO take radical right turns about 1/3rd of the way into them, and that's kinda cool. They're not entirely unexpected, but they do lure you into a false sense of security, so when the nastiness occurs, it's more of a surprise - even if you DO remember the titles/trailers! :D

Roger Ebert has missed the boat on a few occasions, and this is one of them. This is the same guy who hated Blue Velvet but enjoyed Irreversible and gave the original ''The Hitcher''a big fat zero stars.
Wolf Creek has nothing in common with all these stupid ''torture films''.It is not supposed to be a fun viewing experiece, and is not a wall to wall gorefest. There's a reason for the violence in this one and it is based on a real and very recent serial murder case in Autralia. This film has much more in common with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, only difference being that it takes place in the Australian outback. Both films are great in my opinion.Real classic horror. Two of the most terrifying films i've ever seen.

Another classic of the "torture porn" genre.

This thread has made me want to watch Hostel. DVD copies of Cabin Fever and Saw are available at every pawn shop in the universe.

I try to stay away from anything that has Tarantino's name on it.Same with Eli Roth and Rob Zombie.

I've liked horror movies all my life. I can't say I didn't like Hostel. It was interesting to me. It is also neat to me to see how far they will push horror movies. I remember a few years back they weren't releasing any horror movies and now they release a new one every other week. so good for people who like the genre. Steve if you watched the whole thing something must of interested you about it. :)

The thing is, "Hostel" and other recent "gorno" movies aren't breaking barriers or any more extreme than many exploitation/horror movies were 30 years ago. The difference is that these recent movies played at everyone's local multiplex and now are available on cable while most of the more extreme horror movies of the 70s and 80s played at the drive-in or in 42nd street grindhouses before going to video.

Takashi Miike's "Audition" follows that pattern as well. A pretty disturbed movie for anyone interested.

Agreed. Check out Herschell Gordon Lewis' movies in the early 60's & you find they were probably a lot more shocking for that time period than these torture films are now.

If Hostel was a brilliant piece of filmmaking like A Clockwork Orange or Psycho then I might able to tolerate the disturbing themes.

But unfortunately it's just trash of the worst kind.

Wow....I just read the synopsis of this movie on Wiki. Made me sick just reading it. Gave me that lump in the throat feeling. I just don't see the point in a movie like this. I love a good scare but this just seems ridiculous, over the top, and way too extreme. I wish I never even read the description. With all the crap that is the world in 2007 do we really need this stuff?

  18. Everything is relative, mate!, every movie has its merits, this one was a "breath of fresh air" to me. I never thought a movie like this could come out of Hollywood, it has that foreign touch a la Visconti, or Passolini!.
Fortunately for the faint of heart we have "Crocodile Dundee"

  22. Yes I did, It is a very original concept, maybe not as gory as some things are in real life, but really good. I was really impressed.

I guess the majority of people here haven't read 'Fangoria" magazine much. Most gory movies just aren't for anyone even slightly squemish. For me watching most movies nowadays, I find it hard to sit & watch & really get into it. 90% of the time I'm sitting there thinking this acting sucks or nice makeup job or how did they do that special effect (pre-CGI). Most of these torture porn movies (this one included) are so over the top & unrealistic that I wind up treating them as a black comedy & having several good laughs. If I want real horror, I'll read a newspaper or watch CNN.

lol...oh btw, I hate when they blow up a car and it flips over that you can still see the explosive canister...its so tacky...I point it out to my wife everytime. Even with the millions spent on Mission Impossible, they still cant get away from that.

    Anyway, sorry for the mini-hijacking!

  25. Don't. They're awful, incompetent dreck, and the guy only has a reputation owing to how early he came along and how far he was willing to go with the gore (and even that is very fake looking overall). Having watched crap like The Gruesome Twosome and The Gore Gore Girls, I have a newfound appreciation for the skills of Ed Wood. At least he could compose a shot (usually) and keep the camera in focus.
