I originally scanned the two-page article in as PDF and they came out very good for a thirty-year old magazine but the files proved to be too large to be uploaded. Downsizing the files as GIF via PhotoShop has turned out not to be so good ... I can give it another try since I still have the PDF's.

I tried to use the magnifier in Windows to read it, but it is impossible due to the poor scan. Hope you work it out. How about an OCR program? Then it can be put into a Word document.

You have to PM me your email address so I can email the two pages to you. I just tried again and reduced the PDF pagesize to 131KB and 151KB and they are still too large for the forum upload.

The pages are quite readable now. My Canon scanner is a few years old. While I can scan in the individual pages for this article in PDF format, I cannot organize the pages into a PDF document since I do not have the full version (i.e. both read and write) Adobe Pagemaker.

Just finished reading it. What a great article!

Mr. Marantz has always been one of my audio heroes, if not the most important.
    Quite the character!
And much more talented than he would ever admit. He designed the Model 1 Audio Consolette all by himself, from scratch!
And that famous Marantz font and front panel designs were also his!

He hired chief engineer Sid Smith later.

    Thanks again for sharing!

Yeah, Saul Marantz was almost like the equivalent of Herbert von Karajan in the audio world. While Avery Fisher might have a music hall named after him, vintage Marantz products have always been more sought after than most products ever made by Fisher.

Avery started his business in 1937, so he had a good head start. Fisher began marketing premium consoles, pretty much picking up the business left by E.H. Scott (no relation to H.H. Scott) and McMurdo Silver.

Marantz was always devoted to the perfectionist crowd that wanted separate components in the incipient hi-fi market of the early 1950s. He pretty much invented the preamp as we know it today.

He must have had a pretty keen ear for music. Golden eared I'm sure.

Do you all like the 2230 better for vinyl playback than the 2275? Time to try reading that article again.

Marantz was part of my earliest experiences listening to music. Sol Marantz played in a band with my grandfather, who introduced him to my father, an electronics engineer. When Sol was developing his first equipment, my dad helped him with the design. The first pre-production run of 20 units or so was built in the converted attic of the house I used to live in in Westbury. Naturally, we used Marantz equipment.

I realize now that I should have kept "those old amplifiers" that were laying around for years.
