I'm seeking a decent one-disc Jan & Dean "best of." Any possibilities out there on the store shelves?

I have the Surf City-Best Of... comp on EMI of their later years and the Teen Suite comp on Varese of their early years. Steve has noted that the best Jan & Dean is the mono and original stereo stuff, but the comp I have of their later years has lots of Furmanek stereo remixes. While the Teen Suite comp on Varese doesn't have the best sound but they are the original mono mixes of their early material.

Mint Liberty 45's are preferable. Hate to say it, but I don't know of any 'definitive' comps on CD or vinyl...all have their good and bad points, I'm afraid...:sigh:

I have a cd of The Legendary Masters set (that originally came out on vinyl in the 70's - the one with the Dean made cover/graphics and the awesome liner notes with who their girlfriends were/what cars they drove by years) from One Way; unfortunately, it has rechanneled pre-Liberty stuff, but does have original mixes for the Liberty era - I never knew it had been reissued, but I got it last year at a mall chain store. Now, there's a title that would be spectacular for a Steve redo, but alas, an SACD from EMI seems to be pretty much outta the question...

The One Way Cd of "Gotta Take That One Last Ride" contains, I believe, all the Liberty hits in Mono. I'm pretty sure Dean produced that.

I have a strange stereo-mixed(!) Jan & Dean CD from intercontinental records(with the Liberty Logo)...a budget comp it may be, but pretty decent nonetheless. I think I got it out of a cutout bin.

    Steve,
I don't own it...but...Pat Downey's book lists the hits in Mono.

The vinyl one is all-mono and sounds great.

Re: The One Way Cd of "Gotta Take That One Last Ride"

This CD is not easy to locate, I finally had to trek all the way downtown to J&R to snag a copy (several NJ stores were out of stock, and the computer at Virgin Times Square declared it "unavailable"). It is indeed 100% mono, with (I presume) the original hit mixes. Was this originally a vinyl comp from the 70s on United Artists?

yes it was a vinyl comp from the 70s on UA.

That's the same cover as the CD issue....The CD is mono...24 tracks.....One Way-S21-18688. Even has mono on the spine and on the CD label, back cover too!!! It took some searching but I found my copy a year ago.
    Glad I did......

I mentioned this because I had the Lp and it was pretty great. Dean Torrance produced that reissue and it was HE who chose the mono mixes.
