This song might be subtitled, "Revenge of the Rhythm Section." It seems like Ox and Moonie pulled out all the stops on this one.

They lock together like a race horse galloping toward the finish.

    It's Entwhistle's best song....but isn't close to the quality of Townshend's material.

This is his best song in The Who, but not the best song of The Who.

It is among my top 5 favorite songs of The Who.

  7. But Keith Moon is a monster on "Going Mobile", and indeed on the whole album.

I've always liked it, but 'the best The Who song ever'? Uh, no.

Great track but certainly not my fave Who track. I wish they'd put this on a different album and found space to put PT's gorgeous Mary song on instead.
Tough on John as this and Boris are his best Who songwriting moments.

I agree with many of the posts here; if I had to rank My Wife against other Who songs, it wouldn't even make the top ten. However, it adds some needed levity and humor to a "heavy" LP, as Pete's lyrics were getting more existentially and politically charged.
(As the Lifehouse concept was deflated, I'd like to think of My Wife was an "exhaust valve" as sorts...and Pete was wise enough to sense that.)

For me, "Boris" is easily the least interesting of that group because of its kitschy nature...

Sure - I just don't like the cutesy side of the song...

As a young kid, when I first heard My Wife, I realized how difference the song was in context of the other tracks. When I realized it was by the same guy who wrote Boris the Spider, it made sense. I liked it.

However, hearing it now, I start to miss "The Ox". You know, that he's "there", his presence.

And when playing the LP, hearing the next track "The Song is Over" spin, the sense of melancholy and finality really sinks in...and really colors my listening experience of the LP a darker shade.

Fantastic song with terrific, hilarious lyrics. But The Who's best song? Isn't that "Boris The Spider"?? ;)

I'd much rather listen to "My Wife" than the ponderous "Song is Over". After Pete became so self-important it was great to have John livening things up a little.

I probably shouldn't have started the thread the way I did, inviting folks to say no, it isn't their fave. Of course Townshend's songwriting is leagues above, and Behind Blue Eyes and others are classically better songs. I just meant it always, always delivers that pure joy to my mind and body that you want from a rock song.

As a bassist, I owe a lot to John Enthwistle and will say it's a 'great' song, just like Boris the Spider. My personal fave is "Relay".

It is definitely in my top 5 Who songs. So I will go with one of the best, just not THE best. But I always get excited and turn it up when I hear it.

I'm not a huge Who fan but Who's Next is them at their best and "My Wife" is the stand-out track from an excellent collection for me.
    Love the horns, love them!

Good to hear you've come to your senses. :agree:
However, you entitled to your opinion, and you clearly stated why you think so.
It definitely provoked more responses than if you just asked "What do you think of My Wife"...which can actually lead to some bad jokes... :biglaugh:

Thanks for making me re-think the song, in context of the LP, as part of the The Who's songs, and of The Ox in general.
