Hello! Lately the TARA Labs listening room has been playing with a Behold Gentle G192 Media Player, which also functions as an power amp, preamp, and contains a number of other features. While it is a very impressive device, it got me thinking about our usual setups primarily consisting of separate components. Personally I have always leaned toward separates, to avoid compromises that may arise due to compacting all of the equipment in to one package. I would enjoy hearing others thoughts regarding their preferences. Anyone here using an integrated amplifier that they love?

I'm currently considering a switch to an integrated from separates.

Cairn 4808A integrated. I've switched back and forth between separates and integrateds many times. Honestly prefer the simplicity integrateds offer.

It'll be a LONG time before I willingly give up my Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated Amp!

    Fantastic performer!

I went back to integrated amps from separates a few years ago and currently have an Audio Research VSi60. I like it, but would like a bit more power so I've been considering the VSi75.

  10. I almost bit on the VSi60, but then the Pearl seduced me.

  11. Cheap and cheerful NAD C320. Also have a Rotel RA931 which is again cheap and cheerful and handy as it has a pretty good phono stage built in. Although I,m still on the look out for a new turntable !!

For about 5 years I've used a rebuilt and modded Dynaco SCA-35. I have never felt it was the limiting factor in my system. In fact, I love it.

I've sometimes wondered if the perceived advantages of separates are not at least somewhat compromised by the longer signal paths required by interconnects, and additional power supplies that could introduce noise.

I too, favor simplicity. Minimizes permutations to troubleshoot when channels go astray. My integrated only has one button and two dials and the sound is revelatory. Hegel H200.

I have a Musical Fidelity A5 integrated amp that I like very much. When it eventually dies, I may go back to separates or not; if so, it'll only be to get back to a tube preamp since I prefer solid state for power amps and integrateds.

Satisfied Rega Brio-R owner here. I like having only a single unit. I do have a discrete DAC though, and with my old receiver (low end 90's Kenwood) I used a seperate phono preamp as well. Main thing is that in my price range ($1000ish) there just aren't any compelling seperates.

Was talking to Gene Rubin recently, he said 'no one buys separates anymore, all I sell is integrateds'.

I strongly recommend the Exposure amps. And the Heed Obelisk is a great little amp.

Yes I sold off all my separates recently. One box and less wires = easier way to good sound for me.

  21. There are 2 real selling features to build a case for Integrated amps.

    1. New audiophiles can get into the market at a much lower price than separates.
    2. The baby-boomers are downsizing. Moving from homes into condos.

I go back and forth from integrated to separates running a Cronus Magnum right now and it does well. Been tempted by the VSi75 as well. Just a big chunk of change!
