I've probably seen 15-20% of them. Some are fairly obscure, some like "The Naked Island" look interesting. Some like "The Hidden Fortress" I've never gotten around to. Some I might skip - a little of Bergman and Godard (who often seems to take the long way around the block to make a fairly arcane if not banal and academic point) goes a long way for me.

But working backwards or forward from their release dates might provide a reasonable framework for broadening my assimilation of film (though I note 'Larry Crowne' has yet to become part of their catalog)

No, because some of them are OOP, and I can't afford them.

I've seen a hunka-bunch of them, and my site maintains a specific page just for Criterion reviews.

I've not seen all - or the majority - though. Just too many for me to keep up with them along the way! :help:

I would highly recommend NOT skipping Bergman. Every single one of his films is worth a viewing.

I don't disgaree, but when I watch a Bergman film a dark cloud materializes over my head. "Winter Light" for instance is about as austere as a film can be, its severity almost becomes laughable. For all its honest theological wrestling I think it's ultimately spiritually unfair and unblanced. Only a Green Acres rerun dissolves that Swedish despair.

How many do you have to see in order to qualify for the beret, the goatee, the hipster glasses and the black turtleneck?
Because, I've got the laundry duties Thursday, and I don't wanna put ALL my clothes in there unless I know I'm gonna get that turtleneck...! ;)

67% - gotta get past 2/3rds of the collection for Official Criterion Hipster status!

Even though I could easily count all my Criterion viewings since they're on my site, I won't, because the ultimate sign of the Criterion hipster is that he's too hip to count! :D

Most of them simply don't appeal to me, so no.

I just see this as an exercise in self-improvement, but if enhances my hipster standing that's gravy! (And I'm apparently not going to get any advice from anyone here on what to watch or where to start ;) )

The only Criterion I have is "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", but it's a great one to own!

According to my personal Criterion list at Letterbox I am up to 85% viewed. Most of these have been rented through Netflix or watched on FilmStruck. As far as buying them, I have plenty but I'm not a 'Criterion Completionist' by any means.

Oh yeah, another fun guy. Though "Gospel of St. Matthew" worked well with his approach, especially casting 'real' people instead of 'real' actors.

The last time I checked I had around 50% of the collection, but I've fallen way behind in my viewing and can't keep up with purchasing new additions unless it is a favorite film. When they switched over to Blu-ray and started going back to redo older versions, it blew up my plan to eventually acquire every title. I've probably watched about 20%.

The shelves I keep them on is my hipster wall of failure.

I have a copy but I don't let anyone know I own it. It's all very hush hush and woosh woosh.

Sorry to have interrupted. Carry on (with all possible dispatch).

I have a decent number of them. I'm not around my home at the moment, but here are a few off the top of my head that I would recommend:
-Heaven's Gate (only ever seen the Criterion version but the restoration demos make it look way better than what you would find elsewhere)
-Chungking Express (I have the criterion DVD but haven't actually watched it, and since it is oop I would probably recommend just getting a standard DVD of it unless someone else can comment on the extras)
    -Days of Heaven
-Gimme Shelter (if you like the Stones)
    -Y Tu Mama Tambien
-Eyes Without a Face (which also comes with the documentary Blood of the Beasts which is such a brutal little thing)
    -The Third Man
    -pretty much any Kurosawa
    -pretty much any Bergman
    -Paris, Texas
    -The Big Chill

I own a bunch, watched more via Netflix, TCM, FilmStruck. But watching all doesn't appeal to me. I don't like everything with their stamp on it.
