To the OP, not really, although it depends on the genre.

And it's a damn shame. Would be a great album except for the horrible audio compression. The song "Pain" especially suffers from this.

I buy lots of new stuff. Am pleasantly surprised when I come across one every now and again...but "plenty"? That's beyond pushing it.

It depends what you buy. I do buy new releases as well as new reissues on CD and many are not bricked. People around here act like every newly manufactured CD is bricked, which is simply not true.

Well in my experience nearly all CDs I got post 90s are bricked. Especially new artists. And I buy a lot. Like a lot. I threw on a Tess Park CD and almost immediately turned it right off.

I don't really care about the latest Pitchfork/Fantano flavor of the month type bands so that probably has something to do with it.

I've never read Pitchfork in my life, so I'm not sure what you're getting at there. But I buy everything from reissues of the old guard to home demos of local artists. I dunno what niche you listen to that has a plethora and steady stream of decently mastered CD but I am interested to hear what/who they are. I mean, even Jazz has started to brick. I'm too afraid to even look into if Classical has gone there and stick with 80s/90s era CDs from the genre.

If you got a list, I'm all ears.

    P.S.
I've never even heard of what Fantano is.

Classical recordings won't brick, for marketing and targeting reasons.
Orchestral soundtracks, on the other hand, are not immune.

Never heard or bought a jazz CD that was bricked. Most jazz I buy is reissues though, not new stuff.

    I've noticed. A real shame.

Regarding Classical, I have been looking into some sets released in the 2000s, so this makes me less tepid about getting them.

I'm not big on the genre myself but I let people bring by some CDs of their own to play in my rig since my place is less prone to neighbors. Anyway I'm not sure if these were new Jazz artists or what but they were pretty loud. I seriously doubt the genre at large is doing this though, especially reissues. Let's hope so at least.

Some new jazz releases are modern mastered with low DR. Try Kamasi Washington's albums "The Epic" and "Harmony of Difference". Amazing saxophone playing. Not so amazing sound quality.

It is a shame. Such great music. But what good is that if it's not enjoyable to listen to. I still listen to "Lost in the Dream". The album doesn't have great DR, but it still sounds good to listen to and enjoy. I don't even bother trying to listen to "A Deeper Understanding" any more. It is simply not enjoyable to listen to. If I want a War On Drugs fix I listen to Lost in the Dream or one of their older albums. "A Deeper Understanding" no longer exists to me, cause I'm not going to listen to it again other than to verify that its sound quality is squished so badly that I shouldn't bother listening to it.

Haven't heard them, but I've seen the review hype. That label compresses their releases (e.g. Thundercat - Drunk album), which does not surprise me at all considering they are not going for the straight jazz market but a crossover thing designed to appeal to hip hop listeners and such.

Without getting into the sound quality versus DR number debate (acknowledging that they are not directly related), here are the CD rips or downloads on my foobar display sorted by DR, showing albums with DR9 and above (which I assume most wouldn't consider brickwalled) from 2000 until now, mostly more on the indie side since that is typically what I listen to most ... some of them sound great, some not so much ...

I'm as far from an engineer as it gets, but the Winwood Live Cd from last September sounds great to my ears, more so than other recent purchases. if anyone who understands the technical aspects of this discussion who is also familiar with the Winwood care to comment on my observation? I'm trying to understand this from a consumer perspective.
