First, let's look at the dictionary definition of addiction:

Now, I have a simple question for you.

Do you think you're addicted to buying music?

I admit I am, but it's also my one and only vice so I let it slide. :)

    I can't stop, so yeah.

Uncomfortable to consider it that way, though

Yes, and I do justify it in my mind by saying I don't buy alcohol or cigarettes so it's okay to spend 20 bucks or so a week on it. Actually I did buy a couple albums AND a twelve-pack on my way home from work yesterday. But that's rare.

I used to think so, but recently, financial constraints forced me to curtail my purchases significantly. Honestly, I don't miss it that much. Thankfully, I have a pretty hefty surplus of discs to fall back on.

I guess so. I think of it more like a necessity.

I was. I've stopped now because I can't listen to it all bearing in mind my age and the certainty of popping my clogs :)

Yes. Latest state's exhibit is my purchase of the Van Morrison duets CD an hour or so ago --- there's something fun about popping open a new disc on a sunny Saturday, week of release. As noted earlier, there are unhealthier habits. :)

Nah. Obsessive and unnecessarily excessive, of course. But when money gets tight I can (and have, repeatedly) stopped for extended periods and have been able to survive quite comfortably on what I've already accumulated.

And I only buy stuff I like or have a resonable expectation of liking. If I ever run out of stuff I want and find myself buying stuff I don't have any interest in just for the sake of buying SOMETHING/ANYTHING, then I'll start to get concerned.

This sounds like the justification I use. I don't have any of the vices of youth and seldom visit a bar. I know folks who drop $20+ a few times a week for a few beers on the way home from work. If I drop money on music I still have something to show for it the next day.

Yes it's just like cigarettes. Except that it's possible to quit smoking. :) I mean you listen to your parents records as a kid maybe even 'steal' some of them. Then you borrow music from your friends. If you have money maybe you even buy music yourself. Then it's already a habit. Soon you can't live without it. But i have quit smoking after smoking for many years but i doubt that i'll ever stop buying music. When i think about it maybe it's more an "addiction" to listen to music than buying it.

No. As I said in another thread I've now got 789 vinyl lps, more than enough to be going on with, so after I get to 800 I'll be operating a one-in, one out, policy. 3 months now without buying any new vinyl (and just 2cds).

When I'm tempted to buy, I do weird stuff to stop myself. A couple of days ago I was this close to buying the first four Zeppelin remasters at Walmart. Then I noticed that the digipaks (or whatever they're called) are a little taller than jewel cases so I held off. When I got home I looked at my CD furniture and, sure enough, I don't think they'll fit. So no Zeppelin remasters for me. :D

(Plus there's also the pain of finding a place to sell the Marinos. I don't need all the hassle.)

Ok, before I get in trouble - it was intended as a joke dude. Honest.

I said I'd do that when I hit 10,000 titles. I haven't. Deciding what to cull is just too much of a time suck.

Yeah I said that once. Of course when I did hit the 10k mark I stopped saying that :(
