Rush's "Fly By Night" used in the current VW Passat commercial in which the driver is caught air drumming to the song.

That Rice Krispies jingle is terrific. We need more commercials like that. (Although I was expecting "Little Red Rooster" before I clicked the link.)

Those were the first ones I thought of: "the night belongs to Michelob". Those were some really, really yuppie ads. And I agree on there not being the same stigma about licensing music for commercials today; it's even encouraged for indie acts that don't sell all that many records as a way to get your music out. Although it has to be for the right product (Apple--yes, Walmart--no, justified or not).

Caused me to do a YouTube search of "the night belongs to Michelob." Those were some slickly-produced commercials, probably by some of the same teams that did music vids of the time. Totally forgot that Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" was part of the campaign. Seemed a little out of place, as the other songs were at least more current for mid to late 80's.

The backlash seems quaint with this many years of hindsight.

I discovered a couple of modern artists by way of TV commercials. Mojave 3, thanks to several Hummer ads, and Of Montreal from a NASDAQ commercial.

Clapton mentioned in a interview that the commercial was shot before he decided to sober up. It first aired while he was in rehab.
