Bad Company question for Steve

I seem to recall you saying way back, when on the DCC forum, that it would be very expensive to get the rights to release anything by Bad Company.

How much would it cost and don't you think that you would easily be able to recover the financing from say the self titled album on reg. gold cd?

Or am I just wishing too hard?

Curiously what kind of condition are the master tapes of Bad Co. in?

 

I'd imagine that they would be in pretty good shape as the 1999 CD release of "Anthology" sounds great and it runs rings around the previous CD releases.

 

I remember the Bad Company talk on the DCC forum a while back as well. I was one of the people who originally brought that up. Steve, PLEASE DO ALL YOU CAN to get those in the mix.

The first two, "Bad Company" & "Straight Shooter" are my selections, assuming you wouldn't be able to do, say, a 3-SACD deluxe edition!! Now I KNOW I'm pushing it! I don't ask for much, huh??

In the interview I did with Steve back in November of 2000, his answer to how much it costs to get the rights and make a CD was:

More than it did a few years ago, but not as much as it will in the future...

Obviously that's something he could tell us, but then he'd have to kill us-- and there are too many of us to have to find space to stash all of the bodies...

 

And depending on if they liked what you were doing...Record Company A might give you a break but doesn't want everyone else asking for that same price break...
I'm glad we just get to enjoy the music and let the number crunchers do that part...

Why not remaster the Firm while you are at it.

I doubt that the Firm would ever sell enough copies to justify even thinking about doing it.

Has beens at best on this recording IMHO.

You could probably get the rights for a quarter.

On the other hand, they would sell 10 copies (to completists).

The Firm albums are a staple of the $.99 LP bins. The "Radioactive" riff is very cool, though.

 

I remember going to a Firm concert 15 years ago. They sold out the Boston Garden. I like Bad Co. but the Firm was better in my opinion. A Firm remaster would have to out sell some of the lame titles MFSL and DCC released. ie. Benedictine monks, and Vince Guaraldi.

I didn't say HE was lame. I meant, the recording isn't exactly popular. I have never even heard of Vince whoever. How about Bad Finger, now that is lame. I know I heard the recording.

If you think that Badfinger is lame, then you obviously do not appreciate excellent late '60's and early '70's UK rock music. Pete Ham was probably one of that era's best songwriters. If you really haven't heard Badfinger, then I suggest that you take the time to do so; you might appreciate what you hear.

How many hits did The Firm have? Maybe 1 and that's questionable at best.

How many hits did Bad Co. have? 10-15 and I'm not talkin' about some whimpy am. stations.

 

Never heard Charlie Brown Christmas? I thought everyone knew that one. Or the DCC gold of "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus", wonderful jazz pianist.

 

Oh that's Vince Girauldi. I like that Charlie Brown stuff a lot!!

 

Of course I like late 60's and early seventies UK rock. I was a teenager back then. I realize McCartney wrote some things for Bad finger and also produced them. I have the DCC disc and there was only one or two songs worth listening to. That disc is a dust collector right now. Just my opinion.

 

You mean "Schroeder" didn't play his own instrument? What's next? You'll be telling us The Monkees had help in the Studio!

 

Well, there are two DCC discs, No Dice and Straight Up. No Dice had the hit "No Matter What" and Straight Up had the hits "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day". For me every song on Straight Up is a winner. I don't care for No Dice quite as much, but it's still a good album.

No Dice was produced by Geoff Emerick and Mal Evans, Straight Up was produced by Todd Rundgren and George Harrison.

 

Hey, whaddya know! I agree with Luke! This may never happen again!

But we will probably have differences on which mix on "Baby Blue" we like. I prefer Todd Rundgren's mix.

 

Er, I think they were both mixed by Todd Rundgren, actually...

I think I might like the single mix a tad more, but it's pretty much a toss-up.
