I used to hear the following bands all the time on "classic rock radio". I rarely hear these bands any more, and if I do it's only one or two songs, as playlists continue to shrink and old bands get pushed aside for newer ones (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Def Leppard, GNR, Bon Jovi, even Metallica are now classic rock bands).

    The Byrds
    The Rascals
    Lovin' Spoonful
    The Yardbirds
    Squeeze
    Traffic
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Blood Sweat and Tears
Jefferson Starship (Jefferson Airplane too aside from the 2 iconic Summer Of Love hits)

What other bands have largely been removed from classic rock radio playlists?

If you have an understanding of what a target market is you will understand why classic rock radio has moved from the late sixties to the eighties.

Much of the 60s is now off the table with a few exceptions, but there is still plenty of 70s rock being played.

Granted I've never listened to a lot of classic rock radio, but a lot of the artists being mentioned I don't recall ever hearing on classic rock radio (per se, versus 70s radio).

In my experience, the list of bands they remembered is far shorter than the list of bands they forgot. The sixties get almost completely ignored, with only the likes of Hendrix and the Rolling Stones (plus the occasional CCR or Doors song) getting featured regularly on the radio. From there on out, it's nothing but the most obvious hard rock, southern rock, hair metal, and grunge bands that get played, along with a few unavoidable hits from every other genre.

Not that radio was ever bothered much by them to begin with.

Yep! I met him in 1975 and found out he lives not too far away and I go over to his home and shoot the breeze and listen to his stories which are funny and breat taking for lovers of rock.

True. Half were not, but the other half were once staples. Also, the bands that are played have been boiled down to a three song catalog.

So many of the bands proffered here were never on the radio in the first place.

You can’t forget what you never knew in the first place!

    King Crimson? Gentle Giant?

If they qualify, then it’s my turn...hey, I never hear Keith Jarrett on the radio anymore!

My next door neighbor plays the Classic Rock station in his backyard during the summer. I call it the "Who's Next?" channel...
