I had the chance to buy a Banksy in the Magma shop in Manchester about 20+ years ago, unfortunately it had the only image of his I'm not fond of - the policeman giving the finger. It was £300, I would have happily paid that for any of his other work at that time. He had blitzed the northern quarter with his artwork one weekend, I have since seen workmen knocking down parts of walls with these images on, oblivious to their value.

    sounds painful.

  5. I think I shall paste the contents of my shredder to a canvas, and have Banksy authenticate it as an original.

I have known some artists that would rip up their paintings and rearrange them like a collage, to use as a "study" for a new painting.
It's "art" - nothing is too weird...

I would be wary of buying the next Banksy at an auction - it will probably burst into flames...

This is a truly bizarre story. One of Banksy's most famous pieces "Girl With Balloon" is sold at auction for a record $1.35 million US only to be destroyed immediately afterward by an activated shredder which had been secretly built into the frame!

Hilarious but also very strange. Stranger still is some art dealer actually believes that the shredded artwork is now worth even more as the result of being part of a Banksy-orchestrated stunt! A fool and his money are soon parted, indeed.

There's even video of the event, some stating it was Banksy himself filming as he very quickly posted this online and it's assumed he would have had to be near the frame to activate the shredder via remote control.

My wife who is more into art than I am relayed to me that apparently, Banksy is all about making art accessible to all and having his work sold for millions of dollars goes against that philosophy, hence the shredding made a statement about said philosophy.

Why putting £1m through the shredder is Banksy’s greatest work

What are you thoughts? Is it hilarious? Criminal? Sad because the millionaire lost all that money? Some say it might be a hoax as the identity of the buyer has not been disclosed.

..possible 'hoax' if we don't know who the auction winner was....

I also think it's worth more now. Is a Kardashian more valuable in the news, or out of the news? The attention to stunt drives its price. "Girl with Balloon." is a bore otherwise, compared to his other works.

    absurd notoriety at any price

  13. I love this and love conceptual modern art. It always amuses me. This is sort of a modern day extension of the Fluxus movement. And of course this piece is already worth way more that what the buyer paid for it. Got love Banksy.

    Oh, I love him too...BUT....
his "Walled-Off Hotel"& "Dismaland" were better ideas than this.

I love the concept of art as event along with the apparent "trick" on the buyer. I haven't researhced the event too much but I have to think this is staged simply because of the mechanism that would have to be hidden in the frame. Regardless it gives Banksy the moment to comment on the sale of art inline with his philosphy. Long live Banksy!

It must have been an Apple shredder. The battery must have died halfway.
