I love the fact that the Beatles listened to Peggy Lee's "Latin Ala Lee" and found inspiration in her Latin tinged version of "Till There Was You. They sure loved that song, singing it for the Queen Mother as well as on the first Ed Sullivan Show broadcast.

I was just curious as to some of your favorite Beatles' covers. I'm partial to "Devil In His (Her) Heart" and so many more.

I also think the Stones did a killer version of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away".

What are your favorite Beatles (and British Invasion groups) covers?

Twist and Shout - my favorite rock and roll vocal ever. Lennon is just screaming for dear life. Rattle your jewelry!

Gotta go with Money.....they convey the energy of the original, and then some!

Roll Over Beethoven just rocks along nicely too!

Devil In Her Heart is probably my favorite, but I also love Twist And Shout and lots more. Other invasion groups Hermans Hermits doing Silhouettes and the Stones Carol and Little Red Rooster.

There are lots of great British Invasion covers ... one that I discovered recently is ... Shout - Lulu ... I am still looking for the UK CD from the early '90s that has all her early Parrot/Decca material ...

Lots of covers, hard to pick just one. Off the top my head: Baby It's You.

Also from the BBC recordings lots of unreleased covers, one I really lke is Talkin' 'Bout You.

Another Beatles cover, the Beeb version (is there another?) of Arthur Alexander's "Soldier Of Love".

What a revelation hearing that one for the first time was!

Despite the fact that they cleaned it up a bit, I've always liked the Animals version of House of the Rising Sun.

For years I thought that these songs were originally done by the British groups. I gradually realized that they were covers of obscure American recordings:

    I'M INTO SOMETHING GOOD/Herman's Hermits
THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN/Animals
    DO WAH DIDDY/Manfred Mann
TIME IS ON MY SIDE/Rolling Stones
    NEEDLES AND PINS/Searchers
    SLOW DOWN/Beatles
    HIPPY HIPPY SHAKE/Swinging Blue Jeans
    TOBACCO ROAD/Nashville Teens
    DIANE/Bachelors
    I'M A MAN/Yardbirds
    BABY PLEASE DON'T GO/Them

Beatles, "Twist and Shout" -- Especially the 1963 Royal Variety Command Performance -- they were about to conquer the world, they seemed to know it, and they still seemed to be enjoying the ride. Also "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey" from the Star Club tapes.

Rolling Stones, "Around and Around" and "Carol" -- Rip the originals to shreds.

Kinks, "Milk Cow Blues Boogie" -- Most Kinks covers of other artists' material seem forced, but this one has great energy.

  16. Beatles - Anna (Go To Him), Leave My Kitten Alone.

Wish the recent Anthology DVD set contained the full, new stereo version instead of fading it out after a minute or so.

Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man, Not Fade Away, Little Red Rooster

Animals - House Of The Rising Sun, Gonna Send You Back To Walker

Moody Blues - I Go Crazy

Cream - I'm So Glad, Spoonful, Crossroads, Born Under A Bad Sign

    The magnificant Moodies.

    Steve,
The Beatles got Till There Was You from Peggy Leg. Paul said so on a BBC broadcast when The Beatles performed it.

I never knew it was Peggy Lee's version that inspired them. Paul in particular was fond of those show tunes.

Baby It's You and Anna (Shirelles and Arthur Alexander) are probably my favourite covers. John's voice has so much character in both.

House of the Rising Son - the Animals
Four Strong Winds - the Searchers
Go Now - The Moody Blues
    Universal Soldier - Donovan

I always loved "The honeymoon song" from the BBC recordings 8not my absolute favorite, but still...).
While I was on holiday in Greece I hummed it to a record seller to find out the original version (written by Theodorakis). He knew the song, must have been a hit in Greece. But the original (?) version was so strange I didn't buy it...
"Lend me your comb" comes to my mind, too.

The Star Club stuff gets a bad rap but IMO 2 of the Beatles best moments ever are the live Red Hot and Some Other Guy from the Star Club. I wonder why they never did Some Other Guy in the studio?

Gotta agree on this one. Truth to tell, I found the original version a bit of a letdown after I'd grown up hearing the Beatles' version.

I also love the cover of "To Know Him Is To Love Him" on the BBC Sessions. The way John sings the bridge brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.
