    Jun Shimizu’s beautiful brush play.
The leader, Konosuke Saijo, is a top sax player in Japan.

The drum sounds on the Cars first album are pretty amazing.

Just got the 2015 Mofi Hybrid SACD of that yesterday and listened on my studio monitors this AM. Even when it came out I remember remarking at how good they sounded, esp. the snare on "Moving in Stereo," which is my fave track on the album.

    all the best,

Forgot to say it has Saijo’s tenor sax as well and is one of the great sounding jazz disc ever recorded. (The SACD is badly compressed though. The 1985 CD and the original vinyl do justice to the master.)

I always felt that "Who's Next" & "Quadrophenia" to be some of the best recordings of Keith Moon.

  9. Richie Hayward, on Little Feat's The Last Record Album (studio finesse) and Waiting for Columbus (live power).

Ronald Shannon Jackson, playing with his band The Decoding Society. And also as the drummer of Last Exit.

  12. The LP compilation The Kids Are Alright provides very well-recorded examples of Moon's drumming. And of the Who, in general.

Eric Carr on KISS's Creatures of the Night...just epic.
Peter Criss on Rock And Roll Over, Love Gun and the studio side of Alive II (especially his snare sound on "Christine Sixteen")
Ringo on Rubber Soul, and Sgt. Pepper on (particularly "In My Life", "With a Little Help From My Friends", "Flying". Revolver could be included if it weren't so compressed and murky)
    Pretty much any Bonham
Alex Van Halen pre-1984 (not a fan of his Simmons phase)
And it's not so much the "sound", per se, but the amount of racket that Stewart Copeland manages to produce is mind-blowing.

Carmine Appice had a huge sound on Blue Murder's debut. Probably not the best ever, but I thought of it instantly, also, Clem Burke on Eat To The Beat was impressive as well.

I love this intro, Carl Palmer is probably my all-time favorite drummer, however...
This was recorded on his Gretch kit, which I was never fond of the sound compared to the Ludwig's that he toured with and ultimately went on to record "Brain Salad Surgery" with.

Put the 45rpm vinyl from Warner on a great system and Enter Sandman alone should be enough to convince anybody.
