John Carpenter is one of the most interesting cult film directors. He's done everything from horror to action to comedy. Which one is your favorite?

I cast the first vote for Halloween.
I thought this would be the winner, but it's early yet.

This is hard. Halloween is a classic, The Thing and They Live are both damn good, Prince Of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness are both underrated.

Halloween, then Assault on Precinct 13 - both masterpieces

everything else, considerably lower on the scale

    Halloween by a huge margin

He took the Hitchcock sample of minimizing the violence you show and let your mind make up the rest. Scared the hell out of me when I was in the theater.
The fog has its moments, but there's no character development at all.

I tried to watch the Thing, I was nauseated and had to shut it off.

I voted for The Thing. It is amazing how many of these films I have never heard of. Halloween of course is a classic but not my favorite. Escape from New York and They Live were fun, and Starman also had its moments.

I almost voted "Halloween" but I've seen that so many times over the years that I've completely burnt myself out of it. Ditto for "Escape From NY."

"The Thing" still holds up well to repeated viewings, though, so that gets the nod from me.

I'm torn. I think "Big Trouble in Little China" is my favorite, overall, but I'm not sure it's his best film.

I really like "The Fog". And "Escape From New York" never gets old. "The Thing" certainly is a great film, but I strangely rarely get the itch to watch it, unlike the aforementioned films. "They Live" is another favorite of mine but I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece, per se. And personally I'm not a fan of the work he did after that. Well, I kinda like "Invisible Man", but that's only because it's like 'sci-fi Fletch'.

Okay, fine.."The Thing" is probably his best work, and "Big Trouble in Little China" is his most entertaining work, but I'm voting for the underrated "The Fog". I like the cinematography and ensemble cast.

The Thing, because it's still nerve wracking and ingeniously horrifying.

I voted for Escape From New York - it's my favorite at least - and frankly I'm surprised that it's received so few votes so far. Although this could just simply be because the man made some truly excellent films that a large percentage of his output could be considered "best".
