The only time I've ever liked an Oasis song was when it was used to close the epic series Our Friends In The North:

It begins about 6.25 in and closes with the credits. It won't make a lot of sense to anyone who hasn't seen the whole series but the impact it carries, arriving when it does, carries a heavy punch.

Tom waits' Down in the hole as the credits for Season 1 of The Wire and Steve Earle's I Feel Alright at the end of season 2 also are good, if we are straying from movies.

The singing contest before the final battle between the Zulu war chants and the 24th Regiment of Foot singing "Men of Harlech"

Only spoilsport points out the 24th was not a "Welsh Regiment", that "Men of Harlech" wasn't the regimental song at the time and the singing contest did not happen.

Didn't have a chance to post a link for this earlier, so I wanted to get back to it. This movie is somewhat magical to me -- The mostly random selection of characters are in various flavors of deep misery, and yet the film is ultimately surprisingly uplifting. This moment in the story is when all the disparate characters independently hit the depths of their pain. The device of having them sing along with the Aimee Mann song simply and effectively illustrates the cosmic link between them.

I thought Gorecki"s "Symphony of Sorrows" was used magnificently during the climax of "Fearless" w/Jeff Bridges.

No director used music better than Kubrick, and he set the standard in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not only is this segment of Khachaturian's Gayane beautiful in its own right, but it perfectly complements this scene of a man in isolation, in deep space, running in circles, punching at air.

From the Giorgio Moroder enhancement of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. No replacement for the original, but an entertaining alternate. Bonnie Tyler sings this.

Don't think anybody inserts pop/rock music in movies better than Marty and Wes Anderson...

Here's one that hasn't been mentioned yet: "2000 Man" in Bottlerock.
