Best Sounding Original CD's

    Excellent, I have the four box sets of the singles. A must have for DM fan.

    Yes, the Depeche Mode albums of the 90's sound great. World In My Eyes and Policy Of Truth from Violator are 2 of my demo tracks for years now.

    I must add that I'm referring to the CD maxi versions of these tracks. Policy Of Truth (7" Version) is DR13 on the CD maxi, while on Violator (1990) it's DR12. And on The Singles 86>98 it's only DR7. Awful. The same for World In My Eyes: DR12, DR11 and DR7 respectively.

    Do you refer to the original 1985 release? The 1998 release, The Singles 81>85 is compressed to hell.

    I have the 2004 boxed singles 1, 2, 3,, not sure what you guys are talking about with the sound . To my ears they sound great.
    As for the 4th box, I bought the individual maxi singles for that early 90's period.

    I never heard the boxed singles release and I can't find any info on it. So maybe they're fine. The Singles 81>85 and The Singles 86>98 release sound okay when casually listened to in isolation. But compare them to the original CD release and you'll here they're compressed: everything is loud all the time and the music is squashed in your face. The originals have more dynamics, more air around the various instruments, more soundstage and are more relaxed to listen to. The difference is quite obvious.

    I know this is an old post, and this might have been mentioned before, but the 1st edition of their earlier album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 sounds excellent as well.

    Some more early cd editions from Aussie/Kiwi groups that sound good to me:
    Split Enz - Conflicting Emotions
    INXS - Listen Like Thieves
    Men At Work - Business as Usual
    (Cargo as well)
    all Holland/Germany issues.

    How come no talks about our host Steve's job he did on the first three Alice Cooper cd's??? I really want to hear what you think of those.
    All the early Alice Cooper cd's stink on Warner Brothers label. I can't imagine anything from the 80's sounding better ether.
     
  21. Toto and Tom Waits still have the original 80s masterings in print and that's a good thing. The original Little Feat CDs sound very good as well.

    Yes...that box above was what I was referring to. I don't know how it happened but the Love it to Death in my box was an avg. DR of 7. When I remember...I'll copy down the full DR tallies when I get to my external HD. I don't have home internet. The above ratings you posted look more like my 80s mastering of that title.

    Matter of fact...here's the DR on my oldest Love it to Death

    You forgot Hot Rocks 2 which was good as well.
    You do need the London S/T (a/k/a "England's Newest Hitmakers") for the long 4:05 version of "Tell Me"
