So I think I tracked it down and I really like the sound and the album. When it came out, it was roundly criticized and called a career killer so I didn't give it a second look but thanks to your recommends I have it and enjoy it a lot. This find alone makes the ribbing I took for starting this thread all worth it. What a great record and I love the look of the cd. Do you know of any other good records that are on this kind of disc? There's just something about the look of it that just sits right with me, probably some weird fetish I never knew I had. I very much prefer the look of the older discs that were nice and shiny with just a very basic and professional type of stamp on it.

Thanks man! This was the best find for me in a while.

A Flock Of Seagulls-Listen, not sure on the Cherry re-issue but I found the first on cd Bee UK, rivals my US vinyl, plus it has the cool/odd track The Last Flight Of Yuri Gagarin, Wonder why Arista skipped this album?

The first batch of Moody Blues CDs (West Germany Polygram) are good examples to me. I've never heard them outdone since.

Classical music: Telarc CDs from any age are invariably 'right' to me. Part of it is of course Jack Renner's mic placement. But, they appear as carefully mastered as they were recorded right from the start.

The original White Album CD sounds pretty good, to my old ears anyway.

I do think the Hendrix core catalog is a case of the original Reprise "no noise" CDs being the best of what's available digitally as opposed to being the absolute best versions. I'm a big CD consumer, but my current "go to" versions of AYE, Axis and ELL are high resolution needle drops of the 2010 all analog Legacy LPs. The Hendrix digital issues could do with a proper transfer from the original tapes using modern transfer technology but I doubt that's going to happen. By the way, the 2010 editions are seriously brickwalled and save the bonus DVD they slapped on with the mini-documentaries, are identical transfers to the 1997 MCA issues.

Do you mean the original Reprise CDs without No-Noise? If so, I agree that they are the best - especially in the case of AYE and Axis. It was the second batch (the RE-1 versions) that they ruined with no-noise.

OK, glad we clarified that. The "no no-noise" are definitely the way to go :D

On CD, yes. I still greatly prefer the needle drops overall however.

I recently bought all the original Van Halen CDs on Warner Brothers dirt cheap and they all sound pretty good.

Here's one a wise poster from another thread pointed out, U2's Zooropa sounds fantastic as is. If "they" ever get around to pushing out some kind of deluxe version they don't need to tweak the sound at all. I've also found a few Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians albums that sound awfully good. Makes you wonder why the wave of remasters, was it just to sell the same album again or did industry movers sense room for improvement?

I've been listening to some blues cd's lately that I haven't played for quite a few years and have been pleasantly surprised at how good some of the early releases on the Alligator label sound.
