I think Valley of the Sun would fit in this thread. I've seen them labeled as stoner, but they're not laid back enough to be stoner IMO. This is from 2011

I think about 8-10 years, I'm not sure. I believe there is more than one band called Sideburn but this is the one I'm referring to:

There must be something in the water in Sweden.

When I think of "stoner metal" I think of Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, and probably other Homme projects. I'd add to that Fuzz, which I guess you could call Ty Segall's heavy metal band, although that's not a great description.

But for me Songs For The Deaf is a stoner rock pinnacle, maybe the pinnacle. I've always liked Black Sabbath, but listening to some recent bands, I have even more appreciation for them as very influential.

Just listened to about half the album. Very good, A list stuff. I've really yet to hear anything out of Sweden in this genre that wasn't top notch.

Hey let's not forget Badlands. That was a killer retro band so out of place in it's time period. That stuff still holds up well.

So sad about Ray Gillen. Great band though, I agree.

There's a band called All Night from the early 2000's that had a real Aerosmith vibe going on. Probably is hard to come by now, I think they were on Tee Pee records.

Most of those bands except for Cathedral and Soundgarden, I would consider true stoner bands, not retro bands.

Another cool one from the early 2000's was a band called Birds Of Avalon. Their first album Bazaar Bazaar has a real Cheap Trick vibe to it. Then there is Sheavy, with the best Ozzy impression I've ever heard. Firebird is another great band, in the Humble Pie, Cream and Mountain tradition. Gorrilla is a cool band as well, sounds like Blue Cheer meets Sabbath. Recorded intentionally lo-fi. If you're into retro Psych there is a band called Wooden Shjips that is very good. That's really how you spell the name, too. There is a project by Kurt Vanderhoof of Metal Church called Presto Ballet (really gay band name) but is really great if you like Kansas, Styx and Yes. I highly recommend their first two albums, especially the first one. And I'm surprised no one has mentioned Trouble, they have a bunch of albums that are very Sabbath like and of very high quality.
