Bob Dylan - The 50th Anniversary Collection / The Copyright Extension Collection Vol. I Sony Music has released an extremely limited European only 4cd set of outtakes from 1962 & 1963. The album is sold only through selected stores in England, Germany, France & Sweden. The set is limited to probably no more than a hundred copies. The release is triggered by European copyright laws which would pass these recordings onto public domain unless Sony claims ownership by releasing it it one way or another. Yep, so it would seem. Very unexpected. Though it might be the first CD collection designed to sell AS FEW copies as possible. I also wouldn't be surprised if it's sonically compromised (on purpose), as it will surely fuel many bootlegs in the coming year even if it stops the flow of legal releases of the material.

Here's an interesting post from the Expecting Rain site from someone who visited Badlands (one of the tiny handful of stores that stocked this instantly-sold-out collection):

I was in Badlands at about 12.30pm, having not checked ER this morning. Got the news from the lovely chap behind the counter - it all felt slightly GWW. He showed me a copy, said it was £90, and that Sony wanted copies of all the receipts sent back to them (perhaps to prove that it was actually sold before 2013?). I think he said they had 25 copies and that they were all sold. Speculation was that these might be repackaged for a bigger release later. The cover wasn't the one on the download sites, it was the one on the ER frontpage .pdf file. The tracklist was a piece of twice folded A4 paper! And there was a red elastic band around the bunch of CDs! I can't confirm whether this band came from Sony, or was from the shop stock... Anyway, I didn't try to buy one.

 

Fascinating...

 

You can imagine that those tracks as mp3s will soon be floating around where us North Americans can hear them.

 

My mind is blown by this -- it's absolutely bizarre.

You'd think that Sony would release these to a few "friendly" stores and have their own Sony employees buy them back from said store...Sony would then have proof from the store that the recordings were legally sold in 2012 (if that's whats important) and their staff would simply return the burned copies to the Sony lawyers. In the end, the set never falls into the hands of the generally public and will not leak out to the interweb.

If this action helps Sony to retain some sort of copyright ownership over these recordings -- and it keeps them from falling into public domain -- why don't more owners follow this same action to keep these out of the PD in the UK?

My assumption is that Sony is doing this to simply better there case in court in case they start to legally question the release Bob's earliest recordings as they hit the 50 year mark?

Again...bizarre.

Edit: I forgot the piece about this being for sale digitally in certain countries. I'm sure they have some sort of DRM on the files, but enterprising people can find a way around that so that it's not tracked back to the original buyer. This is crazy stuff.

 

Can someone in the UK post a screen grab of the myplay site that is offering this set digitally? It's definitely not accessible from a US IP address. How much is the digital set?

 

And still the studio take of Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues (from April 24th session?) doesn't get a look in?

Hope for a wider release for these, am sure they could sell quite a few, although I don't know how many takes of 'Mixed Up Confusion' I would want to hear in one sitting...

These are all the complete unreleased takes from the 1962 Freewheelin' Sessions (clearly for copyright extension purposes). In this way, Sony has completely released the 1962 sessions. Fascinating release...

Insane! Why don't they release it as Bootleg Series? And to my knowledge, as these outtakes have never been officially released, no PD label could put them out legally anyway.
