I have and have listened to a lot of Dylan over many years, however, this remains one of his most remarkable releases. Every time I listen to this, I think about what it would be like listen to part of a Dead Sea Scroll. I think I posted this another time too. Oh well, I guess that means my feeling about Modern Times hasn't changed. lol
Just listen to Slow train coming followed by Street legal I used to love Street legal but I'm kinda gone off it now the production is awful and sometimes the backing singers all out tune. Slow train coming as a very very solid album. Nick caves favourite Bob Dylan album
I was totally immersed in Desire when it came out. It was exotic and intoxicating to my young ears. The guitar and violin interaction with the raspy voice sounded like something or someone I recognized in my head. The songs were aural environments filled with outlaws and dangerous feelings and mythic meanings. I lived in that album until Street Legal ratcheted up the suspense and replaced it.
I've been listening to Flashback movie soundtrack. I love how Dylan sings "People Get Ready". Their is a nice version on the promo LP 4 Songs From Renaldo & Clara. Also a basement tape version, so the song has been on Dylan's radar for a long time. The Flashback version to me is divine to me, I live his voice on it and the guitar.
Just spent the last week (or three) playing through the first half of this very notable 36 CD box. Next stop, (acoustic) Glasgow! The 1966 Live Recordings - Bob Dylan / Bob & The Hawks 36CD Box (Columbia)
This was produced and released by Columbia Legacy, which seems, or appears to be, a different production arm than Sony / Columbia. It's not in the Bootleg Series and is not numbered as being a part of volume 12 The Cutting Edge. Anyhow, I want to see more tour box-sets like this one. I have money to spend on them.
New DVD release on Friday. Have no idea what's on it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0798DS9DT/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=
I know this kind of thing is cool in @JRM's other thread, so hopefully it flies here. I love this cover of Señor.
Self-Portrait - twice in the last couple of weeks. Superb, very under-rated album, great singing and playing, nice'n'relaxed. If you don't appreciate country music, you might not get it. So superior to Nashville Skyline. Scored a mint s/hand vinyl copy about a year ago, stereo version. Love And Theft - Once or twice in the last month. Equally enjoyable. light and breezy, plenty of jokes and references. I have listened to and own a lot of Dylan, not a completist, but have plenty there in the vinyl racks. I'm finding myself digging into some of the 'lesser' releases as times goes by and enjoying them. I guess I've played the classics enough by now.
I really enjoy Self Portrait, too. There's some Nashville Skyline-era tracks mixed in there that I don't enjoy, as much as the later tracks.
Was hoping there were at least a couple reviews at Amazon. 3 hrs and 27 minutes of Dylan’s early years - either no takers or no reviewers.
Last night I listened to You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. Just the song. I started after listening to Shawn Colvin's Cover Girl album where she closes the album with a live version of the song. This made me select the song on my ipod which starts with Dylan from Blood On The Tracks, and led me to versions by Joan Osborne, Madeleine Peyroux, Maria Muldaur, Mary Lou Lord, Myley Cyrus and finished with another listen to Shawn Colvin. Love this song. Looking at my list though, wondering why there are no covers by male singers? Time for a search.
