Boston's debut album, the album that single handedly started of the AOR genre in rock. With songs like the immortal More Than a Feeling (a song that even hundreds of years from now will still be played on any classic rock station), the party tune of Smokin, the double whammy of Foreplay/Longtime and the catchy Piece of Mind is it any wonder the album was an immense seller. Indeed when the band went on tour they went from doing small clubs/theaters to doing multiple nights in large arenas. So pick you favorites of this classic album.

    Boston's fourth best album.

Starts fabulously, descends into a bunch of Foghat B-sides.

I just love that one of the most recognized rock voices of all is practically an unknown.

The songs that inspired me to play on guitar:

    Peace of Mind (nice harmonies)
Foreplay/Long Time (incredible B3 organ intro and power chords to follow)
Smokin' (power A chord with cool riffs)
Hitch a Ride (fun solo section)

This album is unbelievably strong. Also pretty innovative at the time. I really love the second album too, even though it's kind of redundant... the first record said it all!

"Dont Look Back" is perhaps their most inspiring and epic single song to me, but the first album has more catchy tunes.

It was amazing reading Tom Scholz' account of recording on a 12-track Scully tape machine in his basement in Watertown, Ma. Bringing in drummer Jim Masdea, Singer Brad Delp, and guitarist Barry Goudreau. Tearing down the drums so he could fit the organ and Leslie Speaker in the small area to record.

"Don't Look Back" is kind of the ultimate Boston song, isn't it?

I think you could make a case that the first two albums are "of a piece"... the exact same style applied to a set of 16 mostly great songs. It's kind of like how Casino followed Goodfellas... it's not quite as good and not nearly as innovative, but "more of the same" isn't always a bad thing!

I just listened to this for the first time this past summer. Always thought they'd be a bit bland and generic as they were always labeled corporate rock. Doesn't help that I never was the biggest fan of "More than a Feeling" (I just think it's ok). But I listened through it and it really rocks! I always did like "Piece of Mind", and "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Rock & Roll Band" are really punchy. Great album overall. The one song I wasn't 100% on was the last track "Let Me Take You Home Tonight". It's ok but a good album should end on a top track.

"Let Me Take You Home Tonight" was written by singer Brad Delp and the only track on the LP recorded in The Record Plant, Los Angeles.

Oh wow, I need to hear this Foghat album that sounds like the Boston debut. What is the title?

In high school, Boston was the musical bridge between the dweebs (like me), the jocks, the girls and the metal shop guys.

Enough RAWK guitar for the head bangers, enough melody for the chicks and the dorks. Hell, even my Mom liked it. Was front and center at the jocks parties and the physics club pizza blow outs.

Can't say that about Ted Nugent.

A great album with killer hooks, great production and electric guitar pyrotechnics that even mom and dad got into.

If "Aja" was my gateway drug to jazz, Boston was my entree to hard rock.

    Love it.

RE: Don't Look Back, I wouldn’t argue a subjective judgement on one song but I am curious of your thoughts on the track A Man I'll Never Be.

I thought it was lyrical weak and a bit too much of a ballad to fit with the rest of the material (of the first two LP's) but the guitar solo section redeemed it, IMO.
