Can anyone explain the Art Garfunkel Breakaway LP photo?

I heard "Breakaway" in a restaurant the other day; I had single back in 75. A great Gallagher and Lyle song that was really the only time I showed much interest in Garfunkel. It had a picture sleeve taken from the album cover. I always wondered about that photo. Who is the woman with the cigarette? Is that a guy or girl whispering to Art? Who are they, that they make the cover with him?

Just a curiosity. All I can uncover is that the photo was apparently taken by Norman Seeff, who did lots of high profile work over the years. Carly Simon in the black nightie and boots....

I think it's a guy with the cigarette. And definitely a woman that's whispering. So just the opposite of your take!

lol..looks like a party for sure! Maybe! Art looks withdrawn. Everyone looks trashed.:)

  5. Great album, though.

His version of "I only have eyes for you" is magnificent.

Art looks somewhat agitated and he obviously thinks he needs to break away from this somewhat uncomfortable situation.

Perhaps he just saw Paul Simon arrive at the party?

One of the first albums I listened to on headphones that made me 'aware' of production. Richard Perry did superb work here.

...or the guy on his left just whispered in his ear, "I really like your music, Paul..."

Great cover/great photograph in my opinion. Definitely "a picture is worth 1,000 words" material. It (abstractly) reminds me a bit of the cover of Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door. There's a similar feel to it, and both have the same sort of depth re suggesting certain types of stories for us to fill in.

Laurie Bird was in Two-Lane Blacktop, one of the greatest films of the '70s. She was Art's girlfriend and sadly killed herself in his apartment.

Helena, as mentioned, was in Five Easy Pieces, another of the greatest films of the '70s. She's in it only briefly, but she OWNS it during that time.

This cover really upped Art's cred among cineastes.

  19. Say Art in concert in January and he sill mentions Laurie Bird (dedication).

Holy Smokes, I was afraid no one would show any interest. I appreciate the considerate posts and info. Just a trivial thing that has been lodged in my side-brain for 40 years.

As for Laurie Bird, I'm slightly flabbergasted. Now I'll really stare at that photo. I'm a huge fan of Two Lane Blacktop w/Dennis Wilson, Warren Oates (and to a lesser degree) James Taylor. Great movie to remember what the 70s really looked like. Part of that was filmed in my home state Oklahoma. Curiously, the movie also has Okie Alan Vint, who (w/brother Jesse) was in another great 70s drive-in movie, Macon County Line.

Wonder if they at least had some dessert?

  22. Lennie and Art got it right, Townshend just looks like a prat. :shake: No real similarity in terms of execution either, it's mostly art dept concept rather than good photography.

Here's another movie tidbit: Laurie Bird had a small part in Annie Hall playing the girlfriend of a character played by (wait for it) ... Paul Simon.

As you'd expect some real stalwarts assisting on the song:

Electric piano & synthesizer – Bill Payne (man, is he good)
    Electric guitar – Steve Cropper
Acoustic guitar – Lon Van Eaton
Drums – Jim Keltner, Rick Shlosser
    Bass – Klaus Voorman
    Percussion – Joe Clayton
Background vocals – Graham Nash, David Crosby, Bruce Johnston, Toni Tennille
