  3. let's not leave out ladies out of this either.

Amanda Marshall - talk about a powerful soulful voice. Saw her performing at Tower Records in Downtown Toronto when she released her first album. I fell in Love.

I once had to follow her singing at a pub in Markham, On. at a "jam night" hosted by a guy who more or less gave her her start...
    ...this was in 1992)
She blew the roof off the place and I was asked to go up and sing after her.
I asked the crowd how I could top that and they laughed...We all knew that night that she was gonna be a star...

  6. Yeah...I can imagine how tough that must have been. What a voice....and a looker too! Beautiful stunning vice and great delivery.

How was the crowd when you did your set?

  7. The Tragically Hip...... let's all bow in respect! Haha!

Wondering if this sounds like a US or UK ripoff! ?????

:laugh:Well, they all knew me as I was a regular at that pub every Wed night and I always did crowd pleasers that the band played well like Roadhouse Blues, Sympathy For The Devil, Like A Rolling Stone...
It was a well structured jam with lots of great singers and players and the line up was fairly regular with some new faces showing up every week to keep it interesting.
We had been hearing about Amanda from the host of the jam as he was doing demos with her and he told us to be prepared to be blown away.
Amanda was terrific the few times she came up to sing at the Fox & Fiddle back then, but she moved on and took off career wise about two and a half years later.
She was a really nice girl too!
    Very sweet and humble.
She could sing a Janis Joplin tune like you wouldn't believe...

  9. I can only imagine...lucky for you you got to hear it.

We've been blessed in this country with some of the best female voices and singer/songwriters. Amanda Marshall, Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrissette, Avril Lavigne. Diane Dufresne, Celine Dionne, Melanie Doane, Buffy Sainte Marie, Amy Sky, Natalie McMaster, Jann Arden, Shania Twain, Anne Murray and I can go on......

  13. I was into AW when they opened here in the spring of 1972 for my then-favorite (still active) group: Jethro Tull!! My very first big rock show, I couldn't believe it! Those were the days...

Yes of course. I played Time To Move On this afternoon! Anyone remember that 1972 single?

  15. There was talk of a new album last year, but I've not seen anything yet. I know that she had issues with her label and royalties and didn't do anything for years.

I really hope someone here listens to this, it's long but great. Do Make Say Think are one of my all-time favourites.

  17. His death was pretty sad I'll agree. (Not sure about the cancer thing, wasn't he in hit by a car while biking?)
Been a fan since my university days when I used to see his pre-Jacksoul band Bizness play often.

  18. Yes, he was in a car accident as well, which resulted in him being in a coma for a very long time. You can read details here:

Also way up the list, although they may well be a bit too much rock for some, are Nomeansno:

  20. Rheostatics.

Great Canadian band with tons of Canadian content in the songs.
    "Canadian Dream"
    "The Ballad Of Wendel Clark"
    "Saskatchewan"
    "When Winter Comes"
    "Soul Glue"

    The list continues!

  21. Man, that sucks.

I always thought that if he had better management (or something) he really could have gotten to the next level.
Instead he did a covers album which I thought was a waste of his talent.

Jacksoul once opened for The Staples Singers (when Pops was still alive) and did a great job.
They should have capitalized on that momentum.

Then again, anyone remember Bass Is Base? Those guys should have been huge!

Yep she had a great voice but don't think the material she had to work with did her any favours. Should have been huge.

  24. I do. Great R&B band. One of the members, Roger Mooking, is now a celebrity chef on the Food Network.

  25. Yeah...he also put out a solo record that I thought was pretty bad.
Then again Chin's solo album wasn't great either. What happened to that guy? He was thier leader!

I liked Ivana's first solo album but then she went in some other more commercial direction that I thought was wasteful of her talents. I mean, her album was pretty interesting! Then she just became this typical what passes for R&B / Dance artist these days which doesn't interest me at all.
She really should be going for more of a Solange thing than Beyonce y'know?
