Today I received what must be my 7th overall copy of "Who's Next". After reading a post about a Labor Day sale from a Canadian mailorder music firm, I sent off for "Who's Next" and "Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy". I had read many times about the Steve Hoffman master sounding much better than any other available version. I am now a believer. There is a warmth to "Who's Next" that I have never heard before. I was very used to the 1995 remix and I was happy enough with it but now I feel that I have the definitive version of the disc. Unless MCA wakes up and has Steve do the 35 anniversary reissue four years from now, this will remain the definitive version. I know I am not alone in my feelings about the Canadian "Who's Next". "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy" is also a wonderful sounding disc. It is so refreshing to hear these songs that I've heard thousands of times sound so fresh and full of life. I recommend them both to Who freaks everywhere. Try www.hmv.com and www.absound.com. If you order, make sure you get Who's Next MCABD37217.

If you really want to go insane like some of us here, be aware that the 1st pressing (Mfgd in Japan for MCA) is mastered directly from the master tape. The Canadian disc is manufactured from a safety that Steve made when he mastered the CD. Fortunately, the mastering engineers at MCA who did the Canadian CD mastered Steve's tape flat, which means you have the best sounding copy - bar none - still in print.

If you see that 1st US press from Japan in any used bins, pick it up!! Not a huge difference at all, but that's your definitive version!

I sent off for my copies of Who's Next and Meaty Beaty at www.absound.com about 2 weeks ago- will be picking them up soon- I want to compare Steve's version to my Who's Next MFSL copy-

The Canadian prices are unreal right now.

I was slammed a month and a half ago for saying it was great.

Just received Bill Haley FOMT & Who's Next from ABSound - phenomenal sound for just a few dollars each! Like the Who say, '... a bargain, the best I ever had!'.

    Hey Steve,

I'm not sure the one they sell at HMV is yours..... looks like they have more than one catalogue number out. I'm looking at one I got from HMV numbered MCBBD37001. Is this your work?

    Does anyone know???

    -Jeffrey:confused:

MCBBD37001 is Steve's work, just uncredited.

    Hi Bradley,

I have my doubts.... the Discography shows two different Canadian numbers.....

    US: MCAD-37001

    Canada: MCBBD-3700, MCABD-37001

NEITHER of them is the one I have!

You still have Steve's version of it. Steve's version is the only version of the 37001 mastering Canada issued.

Well, the "3700" is most likely a typo - somebody just forgot the "1" in the discography.

As far as the different numbers, MCA Canada seems to change the prefix (MCAD, MCABD, etc) quite a bit, when they reissue something, or change the price line it is on.

    They are all the same...

I got my Canadian copy of Who's Next a couple of weeks ago from HMV. It's really stunning. I'm shocked at how different it is from the Mofi - very different takes on the same album.

    Hi Luke,

Thanks!! If Bradley & you say it's the real thing, then that's good enough for me...... my doubts are gone.

Wonder why MCA Canada confuses the issue by changing prefixes? Makes it a real challenge on uncredited releases such as this!

That somebody would be me. I copied and pasted (poorly) from a post you (Luke) made on the previous DCC forum.

    My bad...

    I've just fixed it.

    Hi Jeff,

It's a  day on SHTV to hear that even the Forum  needs :help: .

Is it *possible* that someone else made the mistake and your still *perfect*??? Please keep the dream alive.

Did you notice that thing on the side of the HMV site that says "other people who bought this title also bought..."

According to the 9 copies that I own direct from A&B Sound, the correct number for Steves version here in Canada is MCABD-37217 and not 37001! That number belongs to the remastered version and not Steves.

    Hi Dave,

What's going on here??? Sounds like the freakin' Canadians have really mucked this thing up! :D

REALLY.... I think you are confusing the two releases we have discussed on this thread.

    Per Luke:

"Steve mastered a version of Who's Next for MCA in the mid-'80s. The
catalog number was MCAD-37217. Chances are if you have a
"Manufactured In Japan" pressing it is Steve's. However, MCA switched
masters along the way, and at least some, if not all (it is unclear)
"Manufactured In The USA" issues are NOT mastered by Steve. Luckily,
MCA in Canada has started using Steve's master for their CD. The
catalog number is MCABD-37217 and it can be found at www.hmv.com.

At least some BMG music club copies also use Steve's master.

If you are unsure what version you have, look at the total time. If
it is around 43:25 (plus or minus a second or two) you should have
Steve's version. If it is around 43:13, it is NOT Steve's.

Also, keep in mind Steve's master is NOT used on any of the following
versions: Germany Polydor, MCA gold, MCA/Polydor remix/remaster with
bonus tracks, MFSL gold with bonus tracks."

    Hi Steve,

Yes, but we started this circle with the following question/post about MBB&B.....

I think people are confusing the two different releases we have discussed on this thread.

Could we get this in the discography, in place of what's there now? It pretty much just says "buy the Canadian version"...
