    Dear friends,
I have a nice Pioneer CT-S820S, it's working ferfectly, but I just find out that, the capstal always rotates when the power is ON! Is this normal? What's about yours? Thank you!

Probably normal. I own 3 different Nakamichi decks and they all do that too.

Hi Arnold, I don't understand why they are so designed, but your answer has reassured me. Thank you Arnold!

it's normal for a pioneer deck with the reference mechanism.
That way, the capstan is already at the correct speed as soon as you hit play/record. (keeps sure you don't have any speed fluctuations on your recorded tape)

The big downside is motor/bearing wear. So don't keep the deck powered on unnecessarily.

    Very nice pics. :righton:

Interesting, my good old Pioneer CT-959 has an almost identical looking mechanism inside the hatch. The capstan rotates when the power is ON on my CT-959 too so this is normal and nothing to worry about.

I have a Nakamichi Cassette Deck 2 with spinning capstan when power is on. Long ago, had a Panasonic cassette deck and recall it did that also. However, my Nakamichi CR-1A & CR-2A decks don't do that.
