I remember reading a few negative comments regarding the quality of the MFSL Cat Stevens catalog on compact disc. Are the new remasters considered better than the MFSL discs for the Tea and Teaser titles??

I own both the MFSL and "recently" remastered versions of both titles, and I personally prefer the MFSLs. As always, I'm sure there will be those who disagree.

These happen to be two of my fave albums and consequently, I've listened to them hundreds of times. For my money, the Mo-Fis are the ones to own.

I agree. You'll also find on any given day, the older "AM+" versions aren't as brassy as the remasters. Anyone can disagree if they'd like. The MFSL's are really good, CD wise....

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

I also enjoy the MFSL Cat Stevens "Tea For The Tillerman" one of the better MFSL CDs.

Same here. I love the MFSLs! I HATE the remasters. A total waste of polycarbonite... I think Tom is the one who feels strongly that the MFSL's sound like crap... I'm sure an original pressing LP in MINT condition would sound better, but they are probably hard to find. Not sure.

Tom can say what he likes. I notice that he can't comment on any other cd issue being better than the MFSL's though. MFSL's all the way for Cat Stevens!;)

One more vote for the MoFi's. The guitars actually sound like they're made of wood. The remasters sound very thin to my ears. A huge disappointment. Guess we'll have to wait a little longer for a decent sounding CD of Catch Bull at Four (Steve?).

Absoutely. Listen to "Bitterblue" on Teaser, MFSL. If it doesn't sound like warm acoustic guitars, you're missing something....big time.

Good. I guess I'm not completely crazy. I love my MoFi's as well!!! Thanks for the excellent feedback.

    Carl,
I guess I have a slightly different take. While I have some of the Cat Stevens MFSL lps (not cds), I think the new remasters are pretty good and I enjoy them. Now do the MFSL lps beat the remaster; absolutely and I'm sure the MFSL cds are a bit better as well.

But I grow tired of spending mega bucks trying to replace everything two to three times with something marginally better. So my advice would be if you don't have the new remasters and can get a good price on the MOFI's, then go for it. Otherwise, buy the remasters be happy and treat yourself (wife and/or kids) to a nice vacation with the savings.

Hmmm.......last time I compared the Tea For the Tillermans, I liked the Universal issue more, but that was before I went all upgrade crazy.....I'll have to do another comparison.........

Alright, I'm comparing them as I type this............Ok, I have a different conclusion now. Courtesy of my upgrading......... It seems the New remastered version is louder and compressed, and it doesn't have the smooth delicate details of the Mofi version.....
It's amazing what upgrading can do......Too bad the current ones aren't as good...I had high hopes for the whole catalog........Tea For The Tillerman and catch a Bull at Four are the only one's I have from the revamped catalog.......I have the Mofi Teaser and the Firecat, which is excellent.......

I have the mofis and am happy with them - haven't compared the newer versions.

HOWEVER - the new remaster of Mona Bone Jakon (of course not available as a Mofi) sounds fantastic. Really excellent value for a mid-price reissue. If the others are that good I'd have no complaints.
