Here's a little bit more detail from Amazon Canada about the leftovers contained in the new box set ......

Leonard Bernstein – The Vocal Edition completes the series of repertoire collection which had its sensational start in 2010 with The Symphony Edition, which sold more than 18,000 copies, and continued with the Concertos and Orchestral Works set released in 2014.

The 56 CDs of The Vocal Edition contain operatic and choral works and songs, as well as numerous alternate symphonic recordings not included in The Symphony Edition, so that the Symphony, Concerto and Vocal editions form a complete set of Bernstein’s recordings in the Sony Classical catalogue.

Several CDs additionally present a selection of historic Bernstein recordings made for RCA Victor in the 1940s. All the recordings come from the best available audio sources.

This release marks the end of the Leonard Bernstein centennial celebrations on Sony Classical, which has also seen the release of Leonard Bernstein Remastered and Leonard Bernstein – The Composer.

For those who might be in a similar situation as I - i.e., owning the Archiv "silver box" but no other Archiv or DG box and contemplating the DG History of Music in 24 collection - here is the duplication:

    (1) CD 1 - four tracks from Munrow's Music of the Gothic Era
    (2) CD 3 - nine (of 50) tracks from McCreesh's Messiah
    (3) CD 4 - three tracks from Pinnock's Four Seasons ("Spring")

Not bad for a 24-CD set (16 tracks, which amounts to roughly one CD's worth of music . . . maybe a bit less). Now there is a bit of overlap in compositions but not performances (e.g., Beethoven's 5th Symphony), but I did not count those.

If you also have the Archiv "gold box", which I don't, there may be additional redundancies.

I'm sort of in a position of deciding whether to get the DG box or the other Archiv box (likely not both . . . possibly neither).

Does anybody know what kind of overlap there is between Leonard Bernstein Remastered and the other boxes from Sony (Bernstein Edition - the Symphony box & the Concerto box)?

There is another small, remastered Bernstein box Sony has released this year:

Well everything in the 100 CD Remastered edition can also be found in the Symphony, Concerto or Vocal boxes (since they together cover everything Bernsein did on Sony), but the format is different. Where the three boxes cram as much music as possible onto its CDs (ususally by composer), the Remastered duplictes the content and look of the original vinyls, which makes for nice looking CDs, but its 100 CD contain considerably less than half of Bernstein's output. I don't know how many CDs a complete edition that replicate the original vinyls would come to, but probably in the vicinity of 250 CDs. By the way, the Vocal box just became €10 cheaper at Amazon.de, so those tempted should perhaps strike before the price goes up again.

DG Originals was my first, and still the one I gravitate to the most. So many great performances on that.

Thanks - I just took the plunge on Amazon.de - It was about $60 USD cheaper there than it was on Amazon.ca. I'll keep an eye on this in the coming months to see if there's a better price from another store.

And the contents from tower.jp and Google translate:

"Bernstein's 100th birth plan All the sound sources of Bernstein's Sony classical recording are completed CD re-recording of symphonies and full of young days' performance to RCA are also covered completely

To mark the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, we released three box sets on August 17. It is gorgeously coloring the ancestor of this 20th century's greatest musician. This "Voice Actual Edition" is the final version of Bernstein 's genre - specific box that follows the 80 - pair of "Symphony Edition 60" set released in 2010, "Orchestra & Concerto Edition" launched in 2014. This time, it covers the voice recordings of operas, religious songs, songs, etc., further recordings of the symphonies which were leaking from the two boxes so far, and all monaural recordings to the RCA in the late 1940's were recorded Bernstein's Sony classical recording will be covered in all three sets of boxes. The whole composition consists of vocal music recordings in alphabetical order of the composers (CD 1 to 47), followed by another recording of symphonies (CD 48 to 51), Schumann and Brahms' chamber music with the Juilliard String Quartet (CD 52 ), And RCA recording (CD 52 ~ 56). Like the box so far, there are also many notable recordings here. "Matthew Passion Songs" by English singing [CD 1 and 2] are the only recordings of Bernstein, commentary by Bernstein can also tell about his unique work view. Beethoven's "Massa Solemnis" [CD 3] listens to the dramatic performance, which is more feverish than the re-recording with the later Concertgebouw. Berlioz 'Requiem' 【CD 5】 is Bernstein's only recording, recorded in Paris' Invalides, where the work was premiered in parallel with the recording. Four songs of Haydn's masses and "Creation of the heavens and the earth" [CD 4, 17-20], along with Haydn's symphonies, is a masterpiece that proves the goodness of Bernstein's compatibility with this composer. Debussy 'The martyrdom of St Sebastian' was narrated English by Bernstein translated and proofreaded, and actress Felicia Monte Alegre (Mrs Bernstein) is speaking of Sebastian's role. Handel "Messiah" (CD 14 ~ 15) recorded December 31, 1956 is Bernstein's only recording, and one of the oldest stereo recordings by Sony Classical. It is valuable in that Bernstein did not leave a re-recording a later in Bloch 'sacred worship' 【CD 10】, Janacheve 'Graegor · Mass', Poulenc 'Gloria' 【CD 21】, Millau's rare 'Coe Fole' 【CD 30】 . Bernstein connected with Messiann, such as "Turan Galla Symphony" was premiered in the United States, but the recording of the Messianese work is only "the three existing minority liturgies of God" 【CD 30】.

CD 22-29 is a professional Mahler, re-recording of the symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" with the London Philharmonic Orchestra recorded in parallel with the video recording 【CD 22 ~ 23】, "The Song of the Earth" with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra In addition to the CD 24], No. 5 "Adderjet" 【CD 23】 is a valuable live performance at Tel Aviv 【CD 25】 is the final movement of No. 2 "Resurrection" at the memorial ceremony of Robert Kennedy. The eloquent accompaniment by song is also the best, but with all the piano accompaniment F = co-star with Decekau [CD 29], the "live child's mysterious horn" live at Vienna Konzerthaus [CD 28] is the ultimate It is a masterpiece of. R. Strauss 'Rose Knight' 【CD 32 ~ 34】 and Verdy 'Falstaff' 【CD 36 ~ 37】 were sessions assembled in parallel with the great success at the Vienna State Opera, Bernstein's individuality which does not fit in the framework of the opera performance is exquisitely demonstrated. "Rose Knight" is produced by John Calshow, "Falstaff" is produced by Eric Smith, and they are also worth noting that both companies are engineering by Gordon Parry and James Rockey's Decca Team. Stravinsky 'King Eddys' (CD 35) was the only regular session recording that Bernstein left with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was taken up as the theme of the final round of the Harvard University Norton lecture, which will be released at the same time this time, It was also used as a soundtrack for images. Renée Colo, Tatianana · Trojanus etc. It is a well-known famous board that has singers of super death grade. Verdi 'Requiem' [CD 38 - 39] recorded in a session which was also done in parallel with the video recording also left the New York Phil and began to shift the axis of activity to Europe and started the performance of Bernstein in the early 1970s It is one. 【CD 42 ~ 43】 is a live recording of the opening concert of Philharmonic Hall (currently David Geffen · Hall) in New York · Lincoln Center, and the expectations and enthusiasm of the concerts Jacqueline Kennedy attended are contained . Although only Part 1, the performance of Mahler Symphony No. 8 with the New York Phil is a precious record. 【CD 44 ~ 45】 is a recital with longtime friend Jenny Tourel, [CD 46] is also a recital with Bernstein's frequent collaborator Krista Ludwig, Bernstein's heated piano with live performances However, each singer 's distinctive singing is highlighted. 【CD 47】 is a Christmas album project with Mormon Choir who became a big best seller. 【CD 48 ~ 51】 is re-recording, especially Prokofiev's No. 5 【CD 49】, Shostakovich's No. 5 【CD 50】 is the last recording to Columbia / CBS for Bernstein and the first digital of the label I have great value as a recording. Shostakovich, in particular, is a live recording of a Japanese performance with the New York Philharmonic in the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, a significant performance for the Japanese. 【CD 53 ~ 56】 is a recording to the RCA in the latter half of the 1940s, the youthful performance of Bernstein is engraved. Also included are the piano concerto of the best Ravel (rarely recorded Philharmonia Orchestra with London recording), Gershwin 'Americans in Paris', Millau 'Creating the world', and even Copland 'Piano · Sonata' etc. I also listen to the outstanding piano solos. Stravinsky "Soldier's story" "Occident song" is the only recording. Each disc is enclosed in a paper jacket and housed in an outer box of LP size. With separate manual (no lyric bilingual).

I took all of the CDs out of the megaboxes, compiled them together in composer order, and put them in boxes that are easier flip through, which I can slide forward on a set of shelves I have to see clearly when I need to. The original boxes are a real pain.

From what we can see of the new DG box, much of it was on the 111 sets, which seems a little ridiculous if they actually want to sell any!

That's a solution, though one I'd rather not use. If the original packaging does not fit on CD shelves, I don't purchase it. There are happily a lot of options for my CD dollars. :)

Who the hell needs boxes and what for? :D

I took all of the CDs out of every (mega) box I had, added some of Vinyl Guru's CD-Dividers (UK) and

    a) saved a TON of space
    b) can readily find anything
    c) ... collected the boxes in the basement until I throw them out.

Really, the packaging is the last thing I want to worry about.

I'm not sure throwing the boxes out are a good idea! Some of these boxes are starting to go out of print and fetching two or three times what we bought them for, but disposing of the boxes would make them worthless. While we might have no intention of ever selling them, I also realise that in (hopefully) many year's time my family are going to be faced with disposing of my CD collection at some point, and if they can make money out of them, then so much the better for them!

There may be a solution for both of you! Give the boxes now and let your heirs know they need to store them if they hope to enrich themselves upon your demise. Win, win!

Or, accept that by the time you expire, CDs will be like National Geographic magazines. Not even thrift stores will want them.

I don't think that's necessarily true. People are still collecting wax cylinders and 78s. And while I realise there is a significant CD demise in the US, it's not quite the same outside of the US. Yes, numbers are falling here in the UK, too, but it seems that this is mostly to do with current pop music rather than "speciality" genres such as jazz or classical music. I think you're right in saying that many CDs will be totally worthless, but they are more likely to be pop music that sold in their hundreds of thousands, not pristine copies of 50CD sets that sold maybe 2 or 3% of that number.

Is the Dutoit Decca Montreal set hard to come across generally? I like some of the selections on that one in particular.

It's been out of stock for a while on Amazon, and people are attempting to sell it on Ebay at stupid prices at the moment - none of which is a good sign that it might still be in print.

This Dutoit-Montreal box-set has always been expensive considering the number of CD´s in it, 35 CD´s. Before buying mine in September 2016 I had been monitoring the price for "several months" and ended up buying it when it was EUR 67 at JPC.de and, sorry for being redundant, for buying at this price I had to wait for several months.
This of course does not answer your question, but my intention with this answer is letting you know that this box-set, with only 35 CD´s, has always been expensive.

This link will help you to monitor the price:
    Amazon Global Product Price Check

I usually like to think about this box-set as being a complement of the Decca Sound box-sets, given the overal excellent sound quality of its recordings.

    regards,
    DB

I seem to remember that Dutoit box being really cheap on MusicVaultz (? the Universal Music site in Canada) back when they had a big boxset sale (everyone was grabbing The Beatles and Stones vinyl sets at the time).

Thanks, I really like the selections on it and there was a single copy on Amazon Warehouse for $75 so I snagged it. I just received my Decca Sound + Analogue Years packages which I had picked up -- starting to go through those -- so it looks like a real nice complement.

I was curious because you can still order it new from Amazon and some other places, but it's out-of-stock everywhere so I was guessing it was actually long out of print.

A warning the sound quality of this box is quite poor. The noise reduction (sometimes heavy handed) means the sound quality is pretty muffled.

    Apologies to the pope :D

Bad sound indeed, as is so often the case with public-domain labels. One of the worst offenders is Documents/Membran, the label that released the Furtwängler box.

I've recently been contemplating the existence of that freakishly voluminous Karajan box set. Does anyone here actually own that beast and, if so, do you have any aspirations to actually listen to everything that's in it?

I never thought I'd get into the mega-box game and that barrier has been well and truly breached, but that Karajan set has me thinking, "Can God make a box set so big that even he can't lift it?"

Incidentally, one of my favorite reviews online involves one buyer complaining about the impracticality of the two-sided design with another user suggesting the purchase of a Lazy Susan to compensate. :biglaugh:

Thanks so much for the tip! Not only do they still have it in-stock, but it was 20% off with a FATHERSDAY coupon -- grand total $41 shipped US! :)

I'll return the $75 used copy from Amazon for that price!
