The Mravinsky/Leningrad Philharmonic recording of Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla Overture is a stereo recording, I think from the sixties. I still have my Melodyia LP with this perfomance.

Most of Jendo's performances are right up there. Actually, the sound on most Naxos discs is too. They issued lots of recordings. Mostly they saved recording in locations where the costs were low, but they never skimped on recording. They also erred on minimal miking and were virtually free from the performer ego-controlled spotlighting that mar so many Western artists' recordings.

Another artist who did a fair number of wonderful recordings was Maria Kliegel.

Can't speak to that particular recording, but for the piano quintet, at least, I'm partial to the old Victor Aller/Hollywood Quartet recording originally on Capitol.

Oh, and don't miss the work in its alternate guise as a sonata for two pianos, four hands.

Interesting thing about the earlier recording: it was the second attempt. The same artists recorded this concerto and the Prokofiev 1st on the same day a little earlier, but the side breaks kept coming out wrong. After all the sides were cut, the puzzled engineers figured out that the lathe had been set to a somewhat wrong speed (slow, as I recall it, meaning that the records would play back sharp at 78 RPM). The Brahms was redone, as Victor knew it could not get by with a blunder like that in such a familiar work. The Prokofiev, however, was new enough that Victor decided to issue the off-speed recording, reasoning that nobody would notice.

I've never heard of anyone issuing the off-speed Brahms takes; I assume Victor destroyed those masters.

Yeah I haven't read anything anywhere good about Him.
Like ya said I have read that He likes to HAMMER His way thru a piece.
I'm not into listening to the beating of ivory....tickle is much more preferred!!

If CD's were records I wonder what speed they woulda been?
They spin at like a zillion miles an hour in the player! 250 RPM maybe? :D

My little balletomane is about to turn 7, and I'd like to get her a copy of Rodeo on DVD (or VHS). Alas, nothing seems to turn up on Amazon or eBay. Can anybody point me to a copy? I can't believe there's never been a home video edition of this popular score presented in the theater as originally intended.

They run at variable RPM to maintain a constant surface speed. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think it's something like 300 RPM at one of the extremes. There actually was one label in the 78 era that took a similar approach, requiring a specially geared turntable for playback; needless to say, they didn't catch on, and the few survivors aren't exactly straightforward to play back today.

Well, you know, I'm hardly Lang Lang's greatest booster, and the keyboard antics certainly are a turnoff, but aside from the fun factor of parodizing his name, I can't say that what I've heard in admittedly limited exposure on the radio colors him a banger. In fact, his tone has struck me as quite nice for a modern pianist. You want a banger, now, get a load of Evgeny Kissin--but nobody ever seems to remark on *his* tonal transgressions. Odd, but them's horse races, I guess....

    Classical titles released on open-reel

Yarlung Records has released four classical music albums in RTR format. You need a half-track, 15 ips deck to play them. IEC play EQ (35 usec) is needed as well. If you only have an NAB EQ deck, you could just back off the treble by about 3 db and it will be close. A good repair shop could change play EQ as well (just change two cap values).

The Tape Project has already done this, but Yarlung's prices ($125) are a lot more affordable. Considering the labor involved and the cost of raw tape it's a fair price. Content is quite good as well (see review).

Evgeny Kissin never impressed me just cuz of that.
Don't have a single CD of His....can't stand Him.
I like a "gentle" playing of the piano with feeling!
Moravec captures this well as well as De Leeuw....Osboune and O'Connor.
Few others also. Some don't like the "soft" playing....I do.

One of my very fav Piano CD's is this one.

Another instrument I don't like abused is Violin.
If it's "Sawed" on it ruins it for me.....delicate with feeling works.
Modern favs are Manze...Hahn and Midori to name a few I really enjoy.

I don't have any Telemann and the sound bites for this sound very very nice.
Is it worthy of my collection?

I just signed up with Spoitfy.

This is going to raise major havoc. The SQ for historical recordings is just fine, I no longer need to hunt down MORE copies of the Arthur Schnabel Beethoven Sonata Cycle.
