I have not visited the Carnegie Hall in over a decade that I cannot even tell if this box is a good 2-D replica of the concert hall. LOL ...

Sounds like a lot of work to me. Do you start with the Beethoven? Bach? What would constitute the "Warmup" and which the "Payoff?" I like both equally, but have the funny feeling that the Diabelli Variations might be a bit more strenuous. I'm sure Schiff has no problem covering the Goldberg Variations. I heard his technique poop out with the Hammerklavier, in concert.

Probably more an issue of plectral technique than microphone technique. Nigel North is one of those lute players who plays full out. I suspect he uses his nails—some lute players only use their finger tips, a lute player explained the difference to me. Nigel North is a great lute player, his Dowland series from Naxos is my favorite Dowland on lute.

George, You were quite right in rating Claudio Arrau as one of the top Chopin interpreters. The Chopin Piano Sonata No. 3 on this CD is outstanding ... :agree:

That MLP disc is a beauty. The sleeper is the Peter Mennin symphony.

If these works are truly equal, then one would have to finish with the Beethoven, not only because it's chronological, but also because it ends slightly more flamboyantly.
I've spent a lot more time with the Bach work, consequently I hold the Goldberg Variations in higher esteem, but that may be a mistake. I need a Diabelli version I can spend some time on.....:help: I have the 60s Vox Brendel in the LvB Brilliant box, and the 2009 Kovacevich live remake.

The first question I had when I saw the concert listing was whether Schiff would play these works from memory. I suppose a pianist of his stature and experience wouldn't want a page-turner sitting next to him.
