I think of him as a great opera conductor too, but I also think his reputation as a symphonic conductor held up so well. And even though he seems to have slipped under the radar, at least around here, some of his readings of Mahler's and Bruckner's symphonies are the ones I judge all others against. And, as Collector Man said, the advancing Decca recording techniques of the time did help a little too.

That was the cover art of a twofer I purchased in the early 70's - my introduction to Mozart's Symphonies 35, 39, 40 & 41.

You may be interested in checking out another live performance of the Beethoven 9th, which I bought a few months ago. Klaus Tennstedt's approach to Beethoven was excellent IMO, though he never recorded the entire cycle ...

This came today. Very underrated 7th IMHO. Nice Japanese pressing. I owned the USA Angel pressing back in the day (yuck!).

IIRC, Trevor Pinnock never recorded the full English Suites, French Suites or WTC ...

I have the Fitzwilliam set on Decca. I have to admit, these quartets are not an easy listen. I bought the set in 2008 mainly because the price was right-$11.35 total.

I can understand why you would say that, but for me, they have brought so much pleasure. I love music that isn't afraid to show the darker, more painful sides of life. I plan to go on a SQ listening spree, including the Bartok, Shoenberg, Beethoven, Haydn and perhaps Dvorak SQs.

The set is (was) quite affordable. Besides that and Borodin Q, of course, I miss no other set.

Most if not all Huguette Dreyfus' CD's are OOP. It is also quite difficult to find second-hand CD's here in the States ...

What are some great string quartet cycles beyond Haydn, Beethoven, Bartok, Dvorak, Schubert and Schoenberg?

Mozart's final 10. Hagen, Petersen and Mosaiques are all great here.

My understanding is Tchaikovsky composed some excellent string quartets as well, though I currently do not have any in my collection ...
