I actually have it as part of a Brilliant box set.

Here's the most unusual one I have. Combining Vivaldi with Piazzolla.

Will have to check that out.

As of now, Richter is my fave, with Barenboim (DG) and Nat behind him.

To tell the truth, I only have it because it was in a box I bought. I don't know that I've listened to it. I wouldn't own it if not for the box. I've heard The Four Seasons so many times, I can't imagine buying another version of it, no matter how good. I also feel that way about some of the big, romantic piano concertos, especially Tchaikovsky's 1st.

The Vivaldi Four Seasons is like the Bach Brandenburg Concertos, pure warhorse music.

Now playing the following LP from my Schubert collection, an early Philips recording. I do not even recall I bought a good number of recordings by Brendel back in the days ...

This set arrived today. So far, I've just heard the Piano Quintet, and it is wonderful. Very impassioned playing and excellent sound.

Can't answer, as I don't have the Carmignola, but I suspect not. However, he certainly brings the music to life. And I would also not jump to a conclusion that someone who likes Carmignola would not like Pinnock (or Standage who is the soloist in the violin concertos). And remember 7 of the 8 discs are not violin concertos.

I don't have this particular recording but all the recently recorded Supraphon cds that I have sound very nice.
Unfortunately, this is not something that applies to their LP releases from the 60s or 70s.

Nobody does. Pinnock's great virtue is rhythmic steadiness. His Bach is very good. There are more intense performances of Vivaldi, however.

Carmignola is Mr. Intense, as I saw him in concert with I Solisti Veneti and Claudio Scimone. I attended the concert at the MET (the museum) in the mid 80's and Trevor Pinnock was very relaxed and mainly conducted from the harpsichord. I don't think the first violin Simon Standage is an intense fellow either. The styles are very different.

BTW, Leonard Bernstein was very impressed with Pinnock as a conductor.

I think this is stylistic difference between northern Europe and southern Europe. Some people feel most northern European baroque ensembles are kind of cold when it comes to Italian baroque.

Simon Standage is now the director of the Collegium Musicum 90, which records exclusively for Chandos. I have quite a number of his Chandos recordings ...

Yes, they've made drastic improvements over the years. Nasal scratchiness has given way to rich, full sound...and not overly spot-mic'd.

How do you like it? I got this disc recently on a friend's recommendation who thinks that this is one of the best recordings of Liszt's sonatas. I don't know about being the best but definitely she is pretty good.
