Replacements on SNL. I believe they drank the green room dry. Equal parts idiotic, petulant, and sorta awesome.

(and it's not letting me copy the link from Dailymotion, so you'll just have to look it up yourself.)

I think Soundgarden bombed on SNL, was just before they broke up 1996 or so...

I remember John Sebastion and his band on SNL messing up the beginning to the song 'Welcome Back' and they had to start over.

Lana Del Ray stiffed on SNL. Doesn't seem to have affected her career, though!

Punk group Fear got their SNL shot (thanks to John Belushi), but created such mayhem with their insistence on moshing that they got cut off.

Bruce Springsteen's live TV debut on SNL in 1992. Anybody trying to turn their friends into Bruce converts were severely humiliated that night.

Some might say the Rolling Stones on SNL 1978 but I thought they were perfect!

I've heard about that performance but have never seen it. I expected much worse. It's pretty cool actually! Boozy and punky. You'd never see anything so raw on the show now.

Well, if 21st century TV counts (i.e., The Internet), then I would have to add Guided by Voices, last Friday evening on Yahoo's streaming live video feed of their New Jersey concert.

It started off well, but then Bob Pollard started drinking beer, then tequila, then grabbed for the whiskey.... By about 90 minutes in to the set, he had downed most of the bottle of tequila, and more or less set aside singing any songs for some lame stand-up routine in which he pontificated on The Boss and other random topics, apparently even including some wonderful "f--- Yahoo" comments that I'm sure were well-received by the hosts of the live stream... I had stopped watching by that point. "Do The Collapse" yet again. :-(

I agree! It was a riveting performance. Nearly perfect in its reckless shambles!

Why wasn't Ashley Simpson's SNL 'performance' the first to be mentioned...

You beat me to it. This was a total disgrace, but I also think the fallout signaled a return to focusing on acts that can really perform. SNL's musical guests have since been better because of this, IMHO. Not always, but mostly.

I agree that "57 Channels" is an absolute mess, but take another listen to "Living Proof" -- for my money it's the best live version of the song that he's done.
