The original U.K. album tracks, along with a handful of singles, b-sides, and outtakes recorded from late '65 to early '66 is pretty impressive.
It was a real high point for The Rolling Stones in terms of creativity and exploration.

So, could Aftermath be sequenced into a double album, with 20 tracks or so? Would it still be as groundbreaking? How would you sequence the album? This is the place to post your fantasy track lists! :)

I've been playing around with a playlist. It may need some tweaking, but here's my double album of Aftermath as of now. Generally, I maintained the order of both the U.K. and U.S. tracks...

    Side 1:
    Paint It Black
    Stupid Girl
    Mother's Little Helper
    Lady Jane
    Under My Thumb

    Side 2:
    19th Nervous Breakdown
    Doncha Bother Me
    Flight 505
    High And Dry
    Out of Time

    Side 3:
    Sad Day
    It's Not Easy
    I Am Waiting
    Ride On Baby
    Take It Or Leave It

    Side 4:
    Long Long While
    Think
    What To Do
    Sittin' On A Fence
    Goin' Home

I envision it as two separate albums. One per group of sessions, not too different from what the poster above has. Here's my track listing.

COULD YOU WALK ON THE WATER (rec. Dec 1965)
    Mother's Little Helper
    19th Nervous Breakdown
    Take It or Leave It
    Ride On Baby
    Sad Day
    Think
    ----
    Doncha Bother Me
    Going Home
    Sittin' on a Fence

    AFTERMATH (rec. March 1966)
    Paint It, Black
    Stupid Girl
    Lady Jane
    Under My Thumb
    If You Let Me
    Long Long While
    ----
    Flight 505
    High and Dry
    Out of Time
    It's Not Easy
    I Am Waiting
    What to Do

Some discographies add the bootleg outtake Looking Tired to the early Could You Walk On Water track listing and some discographies also list If You Let Me from Metamorphosis as part of the Aftermath sessions as well.

I created a cdr around here somewhere that had the the sessions pretty much in order the way they were recorded and they all all fit on one cdr. The Could You Walk On Water sessions followed by the Aftermath sessions. I included all the U.K and U.S. tracks, the b-sides, Flowers tracks and If You Let Me.

Wasn't "If You Let Me" a Between The Buttons outtake?

It is up for debate. I have seen it listed as coming from either the late Aftermath or early Between The Buttons sessions. I guess it depends upon which discography you use.

I actually think Looking Tired tired sounds like it was recorded earlier than the Could You Walk On Water sessions.

    Cool song.

Lookin’ Tired has never been officially released but it is a well known track from the underground LP “Bright Lights Big City”. It was recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood on September 6, 1965.

I have not heard that. I suppose if they got enough bad press for the title, they would deny it.

COULD YOU WALK ON THE WATER? is really a mysterious case. Was the whole thing a hoax ALO did just to get publicity? Actually if we look the way it was advertised in the press it was NOT the 'same' album later they would call AFTERMATH. Namely, they were stating that the album was to be released in 10th of March. We see the track list that does basically derive from the December 1965 sessions (and only five of the to be released in AFTERMATH). But The Stones did very profilic studio sessions in March 6-9, just prior the proposed relaese date. From those sessions we got such songs as as "Paint It Black", "Under My Thumb", "Out of Time" and "Lady Jane" that sound crucial to AFTERMATH and its single releases.

There are possiblities. (1) One is that due the 'name problem' (like later with the war over the sleeve of BEGGARS BANQUET) the release of the new album (whatever it was called) was delayed, and since they made a very fruitful session 'while waiting' they decided to remake the content, and add new material (and skip some elder). (2) Then it is possible that they weren't satisfied with the material they had by then, and just decided to record some more. The title didn't have any role with it. (3) And finally, there is the option that it was all ALO's ********ting. The band didn't had any plan to release anything in March, but were still doing the material that finally was released in April under the name of AFTERMATH.

Does it really matter who would've got their first in this discussion. I prefer Aftermath in it's original incarnation than what is being proposed. Aftermath is my second favorite album of 1966 it doesn't need any tinkering in my opinion.

YES! The more Aftermath the merrier! Probably the greatest period in Stones history, IMO.

It's cool to have all the songs from the sessions together. I do that kind of thing all the time, making playlists and cdrs. It makes for an interesting alternate listening experience as you hear how the sessions evolved.

John, I'll try and find the article that gives the lowdown on it. I might have even seen it here on the hoffman site. But basically it.s bootleg folklore, with 'artwork' made up by fan's and bootleggers but no legit evidence, other than Andrew giving the title, most likely to ruffle the feathers of Decca. Classic- Stones folklore egged- on by the bootleggers.
