This could be outrageously creative / inventive, or it could just be outrageously over the top -

Bizarro cover of Marty Robbins' "Singing the Blues". It would be a pretty normal rendition if not for the out-there guitar overdubs.

Luther Wright & The Wrongs - Rebuild The Wall is a blue-grass cover of the entire album by Pink Floyd. The Residents (as has been mentioned, I know) of course did many cover versions that are very different from the originals. Their album The Third Reich 'n Roll while not a direct cover of any particular song quotes close to 30 hits from the 1960s. Oh, and Ryan Adams covered Taylor Swift very famously very recently.

Oh, and also Neil Young covered himself with Buffalo Springfield in a very different way with his vocoder re-recording of Mr. Soul on his 1982 album Trans.

Ok, one last "oh also" : The Dub Side Of The Moon is a reggae tribute to the self evident album in question. In fact tribute albums are an entire category for those so inclined to pursue.

I’ve always loved what Manfred Mann did with Springsteen’s “Blinded by the Light.”
