Great late Black Ark track, fist heard this on one of the fantastic Trojan compilations (maybe Open The Ark?) compiled by Steve Barrow in the early ‘80s
Yes, Steve Barrow put the 12" cut on "Open The Gate", Sanctuary era Trojan also reissued the 12" with Watty Burnett's "Rainy Night In Portland" on the B side.
I first heard I Roy's Deejay version on the Blood & Fire album Don't Check Me With No Lightweight Stuff. Love that album title.
A great compilation album from my favourite and in my opinion the best deejay, another of my favourite singles although I may have let my UK copy go and just kept the Jamaican Gussie single:
Jimmy Radway is one of my favourite producers, amongst all the vocal/instrumental/DJ cuts that he produced are very very duds
I think I mentioned to the person that has the rights to the Seven Leaves material that the Jolly Brothers LP was worth a reissue, originally it was only around for a couple of years in the mid-nineties, unfortunately he doesn't seem to have taken any notice of my suggestion although last time I spoke to him there was a lot of Lee Perry releases in the pipeline.
Ballistic put it out on 12" two or three times, it used to be pretty easy to find, the 7" is very easy to get, I know a shop with unplayed original copies, the album and CD don't seem to turn up that much, but I guess there are lots of copies of all formats on Discogs.
The last time I posted this song, somebody here told me it isn't reggae, and should not be classified as such. But I have it on a compilation CD titled Great Reggae, so there. Whatever, I love this groove. Stevie Wonder wrote it, BTW.
