At BowieStation, user marksach says "Just ad [sic] a message from HiRes Audio, saying that the repaired 'Heroes' track is now available. I've had a quick listen and it sounds fine..."

Thank you, my main interest is whether it’s been fixed on the cd and how to tell if I’m purchasing a set with the corrected version of “Heroes”. I couldn’t see a matrix number and I’m not sure how to tell without opening it if it’s the “fixed” one.

I don't think there's a chance that the new discs have been pressed yet, let alone distributed.

Never mind...found the answer to my own question.

"Over the past few years, Parlophone has been reissuing the entire David Bowie discography in a series of massive box sets. They recently released A New Career in a New Town which covers music released from Low through Scary Monsters. However, apparently the new version of Heroes in that box set is up not up to fan standards. After receiving numerous complaints, the label will be re-remastering the album and issuing replacements.

Parlophone stated: " While attempts were made to maintain the integrity of the issue that existed on the original master tape of the "Heroes" album, fans’ concerns have been listened to and a new master is being created to replace the current one.

As soon as the new file is available, the digital versions will be updated and those of you who would like a replacement "Heroes" album will be eligible for one. Further details on how to obtain your replacement CD and/or vinyl will follow in due course. In the meantime please retain your proof of purchase.

Thank you for your continued patience and sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused."

Sure but we need to be be careful. The last discussion of it got a bit intense - passionate enough to cause Parlophone to bring Visconti back in to fix it, but also passionate enough to cause the thread to get locked.

In brief, about three minutes into the title song "Heroes", Bowie's vocal dropped in volume enough to make people ask "what the heck happened?" - not only people here who are savvy about audio quality and mastering, but everyday people who were reporting the problem to Amazon.

Parlophone initially said they'd made adjustments to a damaged master tape, adjustments that they felt were appropriate - suggesting there was no error per se, just disagreement about how the effort at repair sounded.

But Amazon started taking returns, and the music press picked up on the story and started advising people not to buy the set, and lo, Parlophone came back out and announced they'd try again.

My issue is that Amazon UK said they got new boxes, and they sent a replacement. There is no visual indication that it is the newer version that I can tell, I guess I’ll need to play it to check unless someone knows a way I can find out.

I still find their initial response mind-boggling. I mean, it sounds like someone is slowly turning the volume down as you listen and it never climbs back up. A basic visual scan of the waveform for the track confirms what your ears tell you - the two halves of the track are mismatched in level. Still, better late than never, right?

I love the term ‘Loss Of Energy’... I’m hoping it becomes a thing.:D

Speaking of which, there were a lot of ‘loss of energy’ moments on the recent remaster of Purple Rain.. It’s a shame they’ve made no mention of re-pressing that.
