I transcribe music using my computer, and some years ago I purchased a set of Bose speakers. I can't take it anymore. I literally hear more notes using an iPad speaker than these. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

Probably true - I actually use them for my hi-fi setup. They are powered, so i don't need an amp.

I want clarity. These aren't over bassy are they?

These are awesome little speakers. They have what I would characterize as "the right amount of bass for their size". Hopefully others in the forum have these and can back me up. They're pretty popular and sound really good in my opinion.

Also, the PreSonus Eris E5s sound really good as well and are roughly the same price as the Audio Engine A2+. But the E5s lack an internal DAC that the A2+ has, thus requiring a decent sound card to drive them.

I will second the Audio Engine A2+ recommendation.

These are the latest pick by the wirecutter.com: http://m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-computer-speakers/

I own their previous pick the Audyssey Media (aka Lower East Side) Speakers. I can recommend those, but they're now discontinued so you would need to possibly search Ebay. That's where I found two sets new in the box for only $80 a set.

Bose companion 20. Seriously. Quality, convenient, smooth sounding. Try the demo kiosk.

I use a pair of Bohlender-Graebener Z-1's. Clarity is outstanding. They use a Ribbon tweeter. Excellent. Currently powering them with a Fisher X-100-3 at 22 watts and they are fantastic.

I can't speak for the A2+, although I do have the Audioengine S8 Subwoofer ... but it's a little bassy

Dynaco A 25 with Advent Receiver. Near field which is superb. Poor man's LS3/5a!

I've had my A2s for almost three years and still amazed at the quality of sound and the imaging is excellent when used with their wedges (stands). I can not think of a better bargain in desktop speakers.

I need to hear detail not overshadowing bass.

The A2 routinely gets good reviews., if I needed desktop speakers I would likely start with these.

The KRK's are known to be somewhat bass heavy. I use Yamaha HS50s with the matching sub. I too transcribe and use them for demo mixes.

My advice is to spend enough to get something good...a true studio monitor. You'll thank me later.

I guess it depends on how big your desktop is. I have a 6' desk and I am using PSB Alphas. I love these speakers. I am running them off of a big Marantz amplifier and the near field experience of sitting at my computer with those speakers right there is phenomenal, great staging and realism.
