I am not particularly fond of that song, so my answer would be "yes, many times"

Great song, and one of my favorites also, but they had many great songs after "Paint it Black" .
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" and it's flip "Child of the Moon" are great tracks, " Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow?", Brown Sugar","Street Fighting Man" etc., etc.

They are all equally great in my world.

I do like "Paint It Black", but I don't think it's their best song. Probably not in my personal Stones top 20...

Love it, but Gimme Shelter beats it.

IMHO whenever one discusses what might be the Stones' best anything (song, album, peak time period, creativity, groove, whatever), it's hard to get past the general awesomeness of Let It Bleed and Beggars.

I have a good friend who loves The Beatles but hates the Stones. One day he told me the Stones do have one great song: "Paint It Black." I took that as the ultimate sign that it's not one of their very greatest.

I generally agree with tmtomh on the fact that the Stones peaked with Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed -- I would add Sticky Fingers and Exile to the short-list.

However, it is true that Paint it Black is very much a pure pop song and, in that regard, very different from what the Stones were doing in 68-72.

This is a question that has no objective answer, obviously mileage will vary on this. The Stones have recorded a lot of great songs, and Paint It Black is one of them - this I know.

Good song not even close to their best:
    For starters:
    Gimme Shelter
    Jumping Jack Flash
    Tumbling Dice
    Street Fighting Man
    Brown Sugar

Actually, I think the better question is have the Stones (or anyone else) topped "Gimme Shelter"?

At the time when this song was released as single... yes! Paint It Black was really diferent and beautifully writen (and composed)
Is a little gem on the Rolling Stones long list of great songs. Better than Gimme Shelter, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar or Jumping Jack Flash.

Hard to pick any one song to be their best, they made so many. Twenty five studio albums to choose from. Amazing Group IMO.
