Do you prefer original Black Sabbath with Ozzy or Black Sabbath with Dio?

Zero The Hero may be Tony Iommi's finest moment as a lead player.

Fact is...its both, in addition to a multitude of other factors.

I really like pieces of it, overall don't think much of it due to the sound, mix decisions, some performances, etc, etc.
yet never really tire of talking about the album itself because of all the weirdness on all fronts.
Production issues over the Live Evil release, right into Born Again. (and lets not forget the cover art saga)

Heard Geezer mixed it, the tweeters on the playback monitors in the studio were blown, a recording process they put it through "wet" the final mix
(that one could be true, based on a demo of a "drier" mix alleged to be a copy made for Gillian to listen to for improvement, so who knows?)

Its a clusterf*ck, but an interesting one....

That's the story Iommi relates in his book. He admits the record sounds awful due to what you stated. It seems to me it was Robin Black that was responsible for mixing it.

It does sound awful to me. I remember buying it on vinyl and taking it home and spinning it and thinking, "holy crap, this sounds bad!" I was really disappointed.

Yea, I've got a copy of that "drier" mix that's floated around and that's what really made me think it was more a production issue than simply the mix. But I tihnk you're right that it's really just a multitude of things.

As far as that album cover goes, I must be the only person on earth that likes it. I always thought it looked evil as f#ck. :)

Yeah for being in the running for "worst album cover ever", I've never really understood why it's so reviled. I've seen many, many other covers that are worse .
